Any OH, IN, IL or WI campers out there?

Tell me about your local campgrounds please...

After becoming the new and unexpected owner of DSIL's 39ft TT, we're going to take it out for the first roadtrip this week. Would love to hear about your favorite non-FW campgrounds.

Our family loves Harbour Village in Carlsville, WI. It is in Door County, about halfway between Sturgeon Bay and Egg Harbor. My dad and aunt both have memberships there, and we go two or three times a summer. They have an awesome pool with large waterslides, a quiet pool for adults, a moon bounce thing, bouncy-basketball, and they always have TONS of games and activities planned each weekend.

Have fun wherever you decide to go. I like camping, but two or three times a year is enough for me! :)

Our State Parks in Wisconsin are a bargain. But you have to book at the eleven month mark, to get the best. Otherwise they do leave some open for the weekend, but you have to get there by Wednesday nite Thursday morning if you want a site for the weekend. Wisconsin state parks, have their bookings online only.

We have a few JellyStones in Wisconsin and KOA"s.

We have a 48 ft trailer, mostly for moto-cross racing and when I call campsites, they actually laugh at me and hang up. Very few pull throughs, unless you consider Walmart a pull through.

Now that's what I call a toy-hauler... too funny :rotfl2:

When we were camper shopping we wanted something around 30 ft. Since this isn't a fifth wheel, it's actually a little bigger than we'd planned but you can't beat free so it's awesome. :goodvibes

Big bridges and mountains make me nervous even in my mini-van so I'm hoping to avoid as many as possible by taking I-80 across. I don't suppose you have any experience with 70 vs 80 by chance? I can't decide between the mountains on 70 in WV or the tolls on 80 but am leaning towards the flatter ground of the turnpikes right now.

Have you stayed anywhere in OH by chance? We'd thought maybe near Sandusky perhaps as that's about the halfway mark between here and Madison where my friend lives...

Will have to do a search on that tonight. We usually stay CL at the BC/YC so DD20's idea of camping is the Days Inn. Despite that, I think we're all really looking forward to the roadtrip. I grew up with a divorced dad who had liberal visitation and looked at tent camping every other weekend as the perfect way to keep from having to entertain us at home. He passed away last week so it seems especially fitting that we head out camping now. DSIL gave DH her camper a few months ago after it developed a leak from too much snow on the roof last winter. Now that the ceiling is back up, we're ready for action. :cool1:

They're holding a site at American World in the Dells for us. It doesn't look like much, but the guy on the phone was really nice and gave us a great rate plus included free Mount Olympus passes for length of stay. The campground itself didn't look overly impressive but I think the kids will love Mount Olympus. We really like the Madison area and have never been to the Dells before so it's something new. :goodvibes

Devils Lake is gorgeous. It is one of the Wisconsin State Parks.

Why don't you stay at Cedar Point's campground? You could get two days tickets and do the park one day and Soak City the other.

My husband and his friends really enjoy Clifty Falls in Southern Indiana somewhere.

Not too far from Sandusky there is Clare-Mar lakes:

I've visited but never stayed. I remember my BFF's dad saying something about the fish biting his chest when he swam in the lake. :rotfl:

Mohican is farther away but it's a beautiful park. (Ohio)

You mentioned IN in the title. There is Jellystone off of the toll road, closer to Angola. I've never been, can't tell you anything about it. In Granger there is a KOA campground. I know nothing about it, have just driven by it. I know there is camping at Potato Creek, south of South Bend, probably an hour south of the toll road. I know they allow campers, not sure the size. We have friends who camp several times a year there. It's pretty and a good sized park.

You also mentioned I80, you might find some things in Michigan too. I know of one in Battle Creek, my boys stayed there with Boy Scouts once. Small but nice. I think it has something to do with Custer, it's been a while. That is probably an hour off of the toll road.

Pokagan State Park in Indiana.

Chain O'Lakes Park in Indiana.

We have camped at both of these and would suggest both.

If you are wanting some where off of the toll road in IN, then Pokagan is closer. It's at the same exit as the Jellystone that Dawson5 mentioned. My kids have camped there and although neither DH or I have spent the night, we just didn't like the feel of that campgrounds.

I don't know for sure but there has to be a state park around LaCrosse, WI. That area is BEAUTIFUL. I am with your DD and "camping" is staying at a Super 8 instead of a nicer hotel-but with a nice travel trailer it wouldn't be so bad.

I would also second the recommendations for Clarmar Lakes or Mohican in Ohio. There are more activities at Mohican though. Our all time favorite is Hocking Hills in Southern Ohio. Can beat the trails they have.

The jellystone that Dawson5 mentioned is in Fremont and is a great campground, we try to get there at least once a year, normally we end up there a couple of times a year. The staff is very friendly and they are always reinvesting in the campground. It is amount 45 mins. from Amish country. www.jellystonesbest.com

A word of warning regarding Cedar Point's campground, it is very expensive, the newer part is nice, but you are paying a lot for staying at Cedar Point. You can not ride bikes there or have campfires, basically all you can do is sleep, eat and swim there. We when we went to Disney in 2008 it was cheaper to stay at FW over the 4th of July than camp at Cedar Point.
