Any NYC DVCers?

Just really curious if there are any Manhattan people bought into DVC.

If not, that would make me VERY SPECIAL

adamak, i bet you won't find too many responses here.
New Yorkers can't stand mainstream stuff like Disney...

although i suppose w/ the anonymity of the internet, maybe there might be a few Manhattanites that might admit they're DVC owners.

anyway, dbf and i are former Manhattanites who are sad that technically we can't call ourselves New Yorkers anymore...
we only just became DVC owners this year, but started going to WDW regularly when we were still living in Manhattan... a habit we often preferred to keep secret from our acquaintences in the city. we get enough grief from the few friends that know about our WDW trips... not to mention the fact that occassionally we eat at the Olive Garden (i know... i'm ashamed... ), and they are absolutely appalled if we ever mention stuff like that.



i remember a thread from 2 years ago when i first started reading DISboards... where a few New Yorkers talked about how you really have to keep your WDW obsession a secret in NYC.
anyway, someone wrote something which i'll never forget: that they stopped telling their coworkers where they were really going on vacation. if people asked, they would reply "oh just a small town in Florida, you probably never heard of it: Reedy Creek" heh.

Moved out of NYC a year or so ago...

As far as keeping it a secret, it's kind of love-hate from what I find. Co-workers will commonly refer to the "rat," but that never seems to stop them from having my do my killer Mickey Mouse voice for them.

But the whole timeshare at Disney thing truly mystifies them.

I believe if you check, NY/NJ have the most DVCers out of the whole country.

yes, but the tri-state area is not the same as NYC.
you've got to be a resident of one of the five boroughs to be a true NYC DVCer.
(that, unfortunately, applies to me as well )
which is why adamak and BounceyOne are truly in a small, but special group.

Ha! That's more than I expected. Yes, there is this THING about admitting to being a Disney-maniac in NYC. In a city where a drag queen in clown costume with his/her monkey pet riding a tricycle is normal, Disney-lovers are discriminated.



Disneyberry..... Olive Garden? You should be ashamed.
(But, you can say the same about me and Red Lobster. Shhhhhh, don't tell or else I'd never worked in this town again ....)

you've got to be a resident of one of the five boroughs to be a true NYC DVCer.

The eternal argument. As I always tell my DH who was born and raised in Queens, I (being born and raised in Manhattan) am from NYC, he's from one of those wannabe the city places.

I can prove that I was raised in NYC. I never look up at the buildings and I've never visited the Empire State Bldg. That's for the tourists.

Now we live a bit over an hour north of NYC.

Yup! I definitely keep my habit to myself around here. Often when reporting a Disney trip around here, the reaction is an expression of sympathy, as if hearing about a stay in the clink, and then a charitable, "well I guess the kids liked it." We usually gamely explain that we like it too, but we don't push it. It is definitely not the fashion around here (although judging from the occasional hints I get from other kids that they have gone, other families are going and keeping mum too.) What are you going to do? We live in a town where people bemoan how clean Times Square is now and mourn for the hookers and the crack addicts! We're not sickos, just contrarians.

To answer adamak's question-- now do you want NYC people, or just Manhattan people-- because ya know, there are four other boroughs in your city I'm not in dvc, anyway, I'm a dvc shopper (i.e. I lurk the boards, consider buying before every price increase, and ultimately put it off).

From Long Island (that being Nassau and Suffolk) we see NY as being 3 parts..
There's "The City" - which usually mean Manhatten, but is often expanded to include the other boroughs.

There's "Long Island" - which means "Nassau and Suffolk"

and then there's "Upstate", which is everything else.

Sorry Westchester, your part of upstate being North and West of the the City.

I used to work in the Manhatten, and I never realized that Manattenites don't go for Disney. Of course, most of the people I worked with were from Long Island too.

Do I count as a NYC DVCer acording to your specifications?

Born in Manhattan, lived there my first 4 years.

Moved to Queens for Elementary School (PS69).

Parents bought and built a house in Staten Island, lived there ONE summer. They decided they didn't like it and we moved back to Manhattan for Junior High School (104).

Moved to the Bronx for High School (Science).

Lived in 4 of the 5 boroughs except Brooklyn - but my Mom lived there with her family before marrying my Dad.

Family bought a place in Miami. Moved down there for college. Lots of former NYers down there.

Came home to the Bronx to work in the family business. Kept the place in Miami as a 3rd home (DVC is second home).

DH moved from NJ and now commutes from the Bronx to work in midtown Manhattan. Unfortunately, he hasn't adjusted very well. Hates the trains and apartment living. He keeps badgering me to move down to Florida permanently.

Probably more DVCers work rather than live in NYC.

I guess my ultimate question is for anyone who is proud to be a New Yorker. A bunch here!
