Hello!

I'm a Canadian nurse who has always been interested in working in your beautiful country! I was just wondering what the starting wage for a diploma registered nurse would be. I never obtained my degree from a university. Is there a nurse shortage in England?

Any help would be appreciated.:goodvibes

Hi there yes I am a nurse just got a district/ community job:banana::cool1:. The starting salary for a band 5 which is a newley qualified or new post as you would be is £21,176 with increments of approx 600-800 every 6 months for 2years. You also get time and a 1/3 for anytime after 20.00 nights and a saturday and time and 2/3 for a sunday and bankholiday.
Annual leave is 27days for full time and 10bank holidays (7weeks).
There are not as many jobs here as there used to be. You can have a look at Nhs jobs which will give you an idea of the jobs and job specs.

I am diploma level as well but now the degree has come in I am not sure how hard it is going to be to get a job if up against a degree nurse.
From seeing things at first hand.just cus you have a degree does not make you a better nurse. Experience and life skills are more important not how good you can write about ethics maslow and nursing process.:rolleyes1
Have you worked in the uk before? How long have you been nursing.
There are a few of us on here I am sure someone else will be able to igive there advice.

Oh if you put agenda for change payscale into your search engine it will bring up the different salaries.
Mental health nurse jobs are a lot harder to get. My friend has been qualified 3months and has had to go back to her band 3job in AE even though they did seconde her to do her training:eek:

Hello!

Sorry for the delay! Thanks for the info. Congrats on your new job!
I've never worked in the UK before but I have been thinking about it alot lately.
I have been a nurse for nine years.

Good luck with your new job! I don't know, maybe I'll retire to England instead of working there as I'm worried about my pension.

Thanks again!

Hi! I came to the UK threads looking to ask a question about airfare and your thread caught my attention.

I am a nurse as well. I am from the US and am a Registered Nurse with a Bachelors degree in Science of Nursing. I have been a nurse for 23 years and have done pediatrics and maternity. I once considered travel nursing to the UK but the whole process was confusing.

I like the amount of time off you guys seem to get. Even after all my years I earn 18 paid days off per year. But I also only work 3 days a week (12 hour shifts though)

I dont understand the salary. New Grad nurses here in the US or where I am from start at $19/hour. My salary is a bit above that considering my years of work experience.

You are right about the school thing. Some of the best nurses I worked with are Diploma nurses but there arent any diploma programs in the US anymore. My 4 degree gave me 2 years of basic college courses, a lot of theory and research classes for nursing, nursing classes and nursing clinicals but most of what I learned on how to be a nurse came after I completed school and started working. Thats where those diploma trained and liscensed practical nurses came in handy. Thankfully I didnt come out of school as a smarty pants and knew I was green and listened carefully to those around me.

Didnt mean to hijack..... I just find it facinating how people all over the world do what I love to do.

I agree they seem to get more time off! I get 150 hours of vacation a year plus 7.5 hours for each statutory holiday.

I also agree about a new diploma nurses practical experience in comparison to a new degree grad. I myself am a diploma nurse but unfortunaely we too in Canada have only the degree option now. I have been debating going back to school to obtain my degree but I really don't want to! I'll guess I'll have to one day.
