Any northern Virginia DIS users out there?

I just wondered if anyone else on the boards is from around here. I just moved out of my parents house to live with my boyfriend in Alexandria. I've only been here 2 weeks, and I left all my friends and familiairity behind in Illinois. I feel a little isolated because I don't know where anything is except what's in my immediate area, and I haven't really met a lot of people yet. I really love reading the threads on these boards and dreaming of my next disney trip. Any "hellos" or advice/comments about living in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the lovely state of Virginia!

I'm a little south of you, in Fredericksburg and have only been here since 1991.

There are quite a few of us DISers from Virginia and the D.C. area that might be able to give you some advice on things to do in your immediate area.

I've never really spent any time in Alexandria, only driven through on my way to somewhere else!

One thing I can recommend is Busch Gardens in Williamsburg. It's our second favorite theme park, with Disney being our first ofcourse! From here, it's only 1 1/2 hour drive, so it wouldn't be too much farther for you.

I love your fairy clip art! Thanks for the welcome. I just wanted to hear that from *someone* out here. Is Busch Gardens all roller-coasters, or do they have "gentle" rides, too? I was thinking of driving down there for a day this summer.... thanks for your reply!

:D

Welcome to Virginia! :D We've lived in Northern Virginia (near Manassas) since 1997 (I'm originally from Michigan and DH is from Philly). Moving to a new place can be scary and lonely, but the people in this area are really wonderful. You'll be making friends in no time at all.

Not Northern Virginia but HELLO! from Central (Charlottesville)

I live in Washington, D.C. - in Georgetown, just over the bridge from you.

Alexandria is a great place to live, particularly if you are single or a couple without kids. Have you checked out Old Town Alexandria yet? Tons to do there, I'm sure you'll find something you like. You can also take the Metro into D.C. - I won't elaborate about all the stuff there is to do here, because you probably know. Maryland is fun too, if you like theme parks, there is 6 Flags in Largo, Maryland - about 30-45 minutes or so from you. Its no Disney World, but its fun for what it is, and it has a fabulous water park area.

Let me know if you have any specific questions. I've lived in this area most of my life, so I'm fairly knowledgable about it.

Welcome to Virginia :D

I'm down in Fredericksburg now but lived in Alexandria for eight years before DD was born. And I still work up in that area (Lorton). Like Snoopy said Alexandria is a great place for singles and young childless couples. What do you like to do?? Old Town has a lot of bars and clubs. Also good "arty" stuff to do. Post or PM me with any questions. Enjoy! :D

Busch Gardens is NOT all roller coasters, although there are a few good ones there, the Loch Ness Monster, Big Bad Wolf and Apollo Chariot! Busch Gardens is a beautifully kept park, it's very clean, and there are flowers everywhere!

Check out their site!

Thank you everyone for the posts. I haven't seen Old Town yet...my boyfriend and I will have to check it out. All your messages brought a bright smile to my face. Thank you so much. I know there will be lots for my & my sweetie to explore and do as we settle in.

:teeth:

Hi and welcome to the DC Metropolitan area. I live in MD just about 30 minutes from Alexandria.

The DC area is such a great place to living -- there is just so much to see. Most of the museums, such as the Smithsonian, have free admission as well as the monuments. The DC Zoo is also free, but not parking. Take time to visit all the surrounding areas such as Annapolis, MD.

Another northern virginian checking in.

I'm right in the heart of fairfax county, right near Fair Oaks Mall.

There's so much to do as a single around here. Do you all hike, bike, ski or run? There are a lot of sports/social clubs that do any and all of the above. And we're close to the beach!?!?! Used to be that you could join up into a beach house in Dewey... I think they're still doing that after all these years, but I couldn't tell you what bar in dc they go to these days to fill up the houses. Maybe someone else knows, or you can find it on the net.

Unfortunately those days are long past for me. Not the single part, but I spend my time being mommy now.

Hope you find some good information!!!

Virginia has Busch Gardens Williamsburg as well as Paramounts King's Dominion. Six Flags America outside DC is OK, but it is not the pride of Six Flags parks. The Wild One is a great wooden coaster, though. You can head further north into PA for the great Hersheypark. Then you can head into Nuclear World, er, NJ, for Wildwood (which has Morey's Piers and tram rides :) ) and Six Flags Great Adventure (which has the airtime machine Nitro and Rotting Lumber, amazingly still standing! :) ).
