I'm seeing all this coverage about Haiti and I haven't heard a thing about the other end of the island. I can't imagine that an earthquake that strong wouldn't have any impact on the country on the other side of the mountains.:confused3 Anybody?

It is a big island, and I have not read of any damage to the eastern nation of Dominican Republic.

The news reports I have seen have said that DR suffered some damage but apparently not as much as Haiti. The island is big but not that big so I wonder if the damage difference is due to different building standards. For all the devastation I see in the photos of Haiti, it would seem that DR would have suffered more damage.

Hi, I live in the DR. The quake was felt here and it was STRONG, so I can imagine how hard they felt it in Haiti. Nothing happened here. I guess we should be thankful, but it's hard seeing that our Haitian brothers are in such dire need of help. Their lives were unbearably difficult before, now it just beyond horrible. Right now there’s a lot of movement in this side of the island organizing and sending whatever help we can. Hospitals here are PACKED, especially in the border, as many of the injured are being sent here including many high raking Haitian officials and ambassadors from different countries.

It seemed like business as usual here today, but only in the surface, we’re all in a state of shock, disbelief. Kind of: “how can we be ok, when our neighbours are suffering?”.

The DR is not poor like Haiti. In Haiti many of the buildings are just cinder blocks. In the DR they use steel with the masonry. The DR buildings are less likely to tumble.

Actually the DR is considered a poor nation, but you're right about the building standards. All buildings here are reinforced with steel beams that go through the cement blocks. We are in the path of hurricanes, so our homes need to be strong.

I have a friend who was born in the US to DR born parents and her DH was born in the DR. They met in the US. They moved to the DR after they were married for about 10 years. She told me how it was like the US, where she grew up, and how it was different.

Yes it is poor by many standards but compared to Haiti the country is not poor.

My friend said her DH's family had connections, so that made a difference when they lived there. She gave me lots of examples, but I won't so into them.
