I know the Poly is one of the older resorts, does anyone know if they have any newly refurbished rooms? We will be going in November , I hope. Thanks for the info...

All the rooms were repainted, cleaned and any damage fixed starting last summer and most all the rooms are done. The last big complete refurbishment happened from 1996-1998. Remember the newest longhouses are only a few years older than the GF so the whole resort is not that old.

Tikiman: If you wondered of exact dates for the Grand Floridian, it opened on October 1, 1988 and were completed on December 23, 2000 (everything was renovated and replaced, and the resort got different interior designs - many more hidden mickeys).

The Aotaera (sp?) longhouse is currently completely shut down and closed off for a major rehab......

Cali-D,

While October 1, 1988 might have been the "official opening" of the GF, the "soft opening" was several months earlier. We stayed there in July 1988. Had a great time too!

Cali-D, I think you are right. We stayed at the GF at the end of July in 1988. I ran into a co-worker who had already stayed there earlier in July and went right back to my desk to switch our reservation from the Polynesian (may the Tiki gods forgive me!) to the then brand new GF. Back then I think we paid $179 / night for Garden View (but we could see the lagoon from our balcony). I remember we got nice little gifts on our pillow at night, like a small straw box of truffles etc.

I can't convince my wife to stay at the GF next April. All she wants is the relaxing atmosphere of the Polynesian!

Cali D you are correct. We stayed in the GF for our first trip with our children July 1 -5th 1988. It was the best. We were just talking about that trip tonight with my now 16 YO DS who was lamenting the fact that we aren't going this summer. Oh well. It will just be that much better the next time we get to go right. I know we ae spoiled. I can't even think about planning a different trip.
