Any New York City experts here, to help a DIS'er plan a few days of sightseeing?

MinnieM3 is going to NYC soon, to visit Sloan Kettering to check out some possible cancer treatment. Beth was wondering if anybody has any insight into a few things to do, how to get around.......

...I know nothing of NYC and I know we won't be doing any big sightseeing, but we're not giong to sit in the hotel room and stare at each other, either, so.... Would it possible to see Times Square? What would I do....take a cab and then just get out on the street, walk around, and take a cab back? I want to see that place where there's kind of a point/two sides of a triangle, with the big TV screen thing..... anyone know what I mean? I'd also love to go to the top of the Empire State Building. Is that a quick thing, too? My appt. is in the late afternoon, after 3, so we could, conceivably do *something*. I'd love to see Letterman, but that's probably out of the question. I'd settle for Hello Deli!.....

......Thinking we will definitely tour Times Square. Probably Empire State Building....had no clue it was $16 just to go up in the elevator! I have always wanted to see the NY skyline at night, would the Staten Island Ferry be a good way to do that? Is that the Ferry you always see in the movies?

I'd like to go to FAOSchwarz and some big department stores we don't have here like Macy's and Bloomingdales.

Trying to do as many free things as we can think of!.....

Hope we can help her. :goodvibes :thumbsup2

Couple quick answers:

The area she's talking about for Times Square is Broadway between 42nd and 47th streets. Yes, you can take a cab there, get out and walk around. With all the traffic, it's often easier to take the subway.

The Letterman theater and Hello Deli is up at 53rd street - an easy walk from Time Square.

At most times of day, there is lots of waiting in line to get to the top of the Empire State Building. Not a quick thing at all. Great if you have the time, however.

Views of the skyline at night from boats are amazing. You can take the Staten Island Ferry. Good views of lowever Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge and Statue of Liberty. Also, it's cheap. But the terminal is kinda out of the way, and the trip is long with much far from Manhattan. You're probably better off splurging for a real tourist boat - more expensive, but with more focused views. There are also several Hudson River ferry services that will give you a nice trip across the river and back with great views.

They have a ferry that comes to Hoboken. It's right across the river and there is a beautiful park there that you can sit at and see the skyline. I love going there in the summer and just looking. Last year we saw the moon rising over NY and it was so huge. People were taking pictures cause they couldn't belive it.

Well, Dan Murphy, if you do any more nice things I don't know what I'll do! You're a sweetheart. Thanks so much! Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I did find out that Letterman tix are not available on my dates, but did e-mail for tix to Good Morning America. Ya never know!

Had a thought....will also take advice on what to AVOID in NYC as well!

Many thanks one and all!
