Any meals that you suggest NOT getting?

Hi,

Also, the only meat I eat is Seafood and fish so I was dissappointed by the comment that all the Seafood isn't good either. What is the problem there? Is it it's freshness, quality or the way it is cooked that is the problem?

Thanks,

I have enjoyed every seafood dish that I have had on The Magic, even the seafood linquini that is served on Pirate Night. My favorite fish was the red snapper that is served on Friday night. Excellent!

Chinese buffet at parrot cay was horrible. My wife also had chicken at Lumiere's she didn't like very much. She ended up ordering a rock lobster tail wich was delicious...I also find those starwberry cakes you get if it's your birthday or anniversary tend to be a bit on the bland side. :cool1:

Hi,
So why is the Pizza nasty? Is it a soggy crust, bad sauce, not enough cheese, too thick or thin of crust?b My husband and kids love pizza and I was hoping we could grab this for lunch by the pool. :sad2: ,

The main reason is that it's never hot, just luke warm. Add to that a bland sauce and clumpy cheese. I love pizza (even the frozen stuff that you make at home, but I will never take another bite of a DCL pizza again. :sad2:

The only thing we found we didn't really like was the maple-glazed salmon. DW can eat salmon every day of the week and twice on Sunday, but the maple syrple on this dish was VERY strong, and there was a lot of it.

The french fries also have a very short shelf life. When they're hot, they're very good, but once they start to cool off, they go fast.

This is what makes this kind of discussion so interesting. The maple glazed salmon is one of our very favorite things. :confused3

Mushroom Risotto!

Oh, gosh yuck. Intensely salty, almost more than anything I've ever tasted, combined with way way way too much parmesan (I think?) cheese. One bite of that plus a sip of the drink I ordered that must've had some sort of banana liquer in it... <stomach churns>

those starwberry cakes you get if it's your birthday or anniversary

I was reading this thread to my DH and when I got to the birthday/anniversary cake he said "Oh yeah! That thing was awful. Let's not tell them its my birthday this year!" Even our DS6 thought it was nasty.

We enjoyed most of the food (but I agree that the lobster burger was pretty bad - and I DO love seafood usually!) and some of the food was exceptional. Some things we just avoided - I couldn't imagine that a truly good seafood buffet would be possible at sea, so I didn't even try it.

Those strawberry anniversary/birthday cakes are pretty yucky, but the white chocolate ship on top is yummy! :)

At Animator's Palate, we had the Duck and Goat Cheese Flatbread which was disgusting. We tried another dish with duck and we realized we just don't like duck. It may be good if you like duck but we thought it was terrible.

We didn't care for much at Pluto's/Pinocchio's except for the burgers which were decent. For some reason, we liked them at Castaway Cay much more. Maybe we were just starving from all the snorkeling!

I agree, for the most part the pizza was mediocre but we really liked the pizzas from Palo. There was one dessert pizza which wasn't bad but just a bit weird.

Other than that, we loved all the other food we tried.

the fish and seafood soup at Palo - It could have and should have been excellent, but was just so intensely salty for some reason....

also, another vote for the duck and goat cheese flatbread at AP - duck was dry and chewy....and also the veal chop....not my favorite....

The pizza at Plutos was terrible. Kind of like Chuck E Cheese pizza-if you know what I mean. But, being from NY, I am spolied when it comes to pizza.

I am not a chinese food expert (tried to spell connoisoir-failed, miserably). I like the chinese take-out place around the corner from where I live. Not fancy, but a great chicken chow mein. Honestly, I didn't recognize a single item on the buffet. At the back, the chef will make fried rice or noodles and all the ingredients are laid out for you to choose. But I have no idea what goes in to "Pork fried rice-no vegeteble" that i order from home. I was so embarrased I order rice with butter and garlic, and left it at that. It was the only thing on my plate that I ate.

I like the pizza. Especially the late night pizza. I found a cheese pizza that had different cheeses on it. It had gorganzola on it. I love gorganzola.

I found most of the Seafood to be ok too. I was disappointed in the seafood buffet but I think I wasn't hungry. The first cruise I had the Sea Bass. I was being daring, never had sea bass before, and I really really enjoyed it.

Try what you want and remember that you can always get something else....

Oh, yeah, there was that. I thought it sounded so tasty and different. So gluey and thick. It was more of a side dish.

We thought all of the food was just marginal, at best. Palos was better but still not great! I actually preferred the buffets (we didn't do the seafood one) --

My vote for best food goes to the Cookies and the Ice Cream at Scoops! Some of the best soft serve I've ever had! CHicken FIngers at PLutos were great and even the hot dogs were good!

Yuck goes to the steak and salmon at AP --

The food was the most disappointing part of our cruise -- and, honestly one of the reasons that we'll probably try RCCL next time.... although our kids will be have a fit -

We'll do DCL again for sure -- I just hope they improve their food -- especially with the premium price --

I actually sent a letter to DCL regarding the food quality --

Scoops
Reasoning: want everyone else to stay away from it, including the
children - so I don't need to stand in line all the time. :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

After reading (and posting on) this thread, I went home and asked DH for his opinion. He thought about it for a long time, and then I could see he had his answer.

"I don't know specifically, but whichever meal made me gain 12 pounds on our first cruise is the one I will NEVER eat again!) :rotfl2:

When we went on the Magic last year we ate at Parrot Cay buffet as soon as we boarded the ship. There was a carving station and meat I thought was roast beef. As I ate it I realized it was lamb. yuck!

I thought it was a bit wierd. Lamb at a carving station? Roast beef, pork or ham yes..but lamb?

Is this always the case - that they serve lamb at the buffet?

Cruised DCL three times. Amazingly, I loved all the dinners in the main dining rooms. The only exception is the cauliflower soup at Tritons. I did not care for it and couldn't get past a few spoonfuls.

The buffet food imo is just ok (the buffet desserts are awesome). The food at the snack places such as Plutos is so-so. I can't say I like any of it and try to avoid it. Being from Chicago, though, I don't ever eat pizza when out of town. ;) seriously, so can't comment on the pizza.

I was not thrilled with anything at Cookies Barbeque on Castaway Cay, except the cookie dough soft serve, but you can't beat the atmosphere.

While I enjoyed every dessert on every DCL cruise, I see I'm in the minority here on those chocolate chip cookies. I bake a lot here at home, and those ship cookies, imo, are not very good. They taste like cafeteria cookies to me.

Oh, and you guys are so right about the strawberry jello-mold-type birthday cake. It's nice of DCL to do that for "free" but I must agree with the poster who said 'let's not mention any birthdays' just to avoid that cake. Hmmm, do you think there's a method to their madness? ;) In 1999, the free birthday cake was a chocolate mousse cake. It was delicious! :cake:

Well, I feel like I'm complaining about everything, but the focus of this thread is the not-so-delicious foods, so I won't go into detail about every delicious meal I enjoyed in the dining rooms. Mouth is watering just thinking about them.

Wonderfan - I've never been on DCL yet (May will be our first DCL cruise) but I have been on two RCCL cruises and we didn't like the food. It reminded us of a hospital cafeteria. It was funny though because some of our tablemates were just raving about the food and my husband and I would just smile. We figured maybe it has something to do with where one lives? We live in California and have great fruits, vegetables and fish year round not to mention incredible restaurants. But I know when my mom was living in Montana for 3 years she said their veggies and fruits weren't good because they weren't as fresh? Not sure but maybe that has something to do with the difference in opinion. I wonder if any cruise lines have great food? I really HATED the food on Carnival (my first cruise). I literally stopped eating after a while because everything was just gross.
Maybe it is too hard to have great food on a boat in the ocean for 7 days?

:confused3

I loved all of the food on our 7 day in January. That said my DH and I agreed that the shellfish was less than we are used to. As my DH said there is nothing like coldwater shrimp or lobster which is what we are used to here in the Northeast. We did have that wonderful chocolate souffle at Palo but then on another night we had this AWESOME chocolate dessert at I believe it was Animators (it may have been on the lobster night) and it was just as good as the souffle. Oh my God I am now on Weight Watchers and have forgotten my lunch today. This was a bad idea. I am soooooooo hungry!!!!!!! ::MinnieMo ::MickeyMo

Hi Suesings! -- Yikes -- RCCL food isn't that great either we had heard that their food way probably the best -- my DH is a food fanatic and everyone has always told him that cruising would be for him.

We too are "spoiled" probably being from Chicago and spending way too much money going out for dinner too often! Maybe people are talking more about the abundance of food and the constant supply -- don't know, but, I agree, it probably is a bit difficult to have the freshest, most succulent ingredients when you are at sea -- which makes me wonder why the seafood is so marginal ...

I found is quite strange that my choice for best food would be Scoops Ice Cream and Pluto's fare -- pretty telling....
