My DS's computer crashed. It has happened before; I hooked the hard drive up to my laptop, but it wasn't able to open the drive to backup the data. Ran chkdsk/f/r to try and help it. Found some bad sectors, and took the whole night to finish, but still no luck with reading the hard drive. I started running chkdsk again several hours ago, and now it is finding "File record segment unreadable" started at 185954 and has been consecutive up to 186252 so far. I am assuming this is a bad sign. The drive is vibrating as normal, no clicks or anything. My son has music and MineCraft files on there he really wants to get off.

Should I interrupt the chkdsk or would that be bad? At this rate, it could take a month to complete. Anything else I can try to save the data?

TIA Marsha

Well from an IT perspective I'd run checkdisk once. If that doesn't fix it I pull the harddrive put it in another computer or I run some other software that recovers the whole operating system keeping your files. Interrupting things can be tricky. I usually wait till it freezes or sometimes leave it over night.

Sounds like your hard drive is on its last legs. So...

Get another hard drive. Install it in place of your current drive. Re-install windows. Add your old drive in as secondary drive. Copy files from old drive to new drive.

Personally I have my system configured for RAID 1 so that the files are mirrored between two drives. That way if one drive ever fails the second is there to takeover until I can get a replacement drive. I also make sure my most important files are backed-up to an online storage service.

The drive can't be read. Right now chkdsk is still running. It found a lot of files unreadable and now it is daying insufficient disk space to hotfix unreadable file #### for every one it said that about. I'll definitely be getting another hard drive; just hoping to salvage some files on this one.
