. . . or maybe someone that knows about this stuff!!
Long story short: Had my tax preparer efile my taxes. Got a call today that my son's SS# might be wrong. Checked it and it's fine but SOMEONE ELSE claimed him on their taxes!!!! I can only guess that the "someone else" is my ex-husband, as he is a con artist and generally worthless human being. But no one can tell me for sure. At any rate, tax preparer said there's nothing they can do. Called the IRS. They said - mail your tax stuff to us and we'll call you if we need you.
My questions:
1. Am I now NOT going to be able to claim my son?
2. WHOEVER did this, will they get in trouble (like put in a big dark hole for the rest of their lives to rot???. . .but I digress . . .)
3. How long will this take to get figured out?
4. Has this happened to anyone else and how was it handled?
Just for info sake: Yes, I am legally divorced, never remarried)
Josh is my only child and I've claimed him every year since the divorce. I have sole legal custody per the divorce. He has never paid child support. 3 or 4 years ago I terminated his parental rights in a court of law.
Any help appreciated--it's ruining my happy Disney buzz.
P.S. I know that this is a miniscule problem in the big scheme of things and I do not mean to diminish in any way, shape or form the tragedy that happened with the CM at MK. He is in our daily thoughts and prayers.
