My husband has thought of a great new idea, and he would like to get a patent on it and sell the product. How do we go about doing this...w/out going to someplace like invent-tech? Anyone know how this works, or know of a good resource to find out how?

Or, you can contact a patent attorney. You could also fill out the application yourself and then see if you can pay an attorney to look it over to check if it's complete. I'd imagine that will cost a lot less.

He should speak with a local patent attorney. They can tell him if his idea is viable and can prepare the application. Most of those "invention assistance" outfits will require him to sign a very one-sided contract.

Also, he will need to file the application within one year of first public disclosure. The patent attorney can assist him in determing whether such a disclosure has occurred and can provide advice on how to protect his patent rights.
