(I promised my mother I would post this)

My mother wants a monkey. She had three when she was younger (1960's); they were spider and squirrel monkeys.

Anyway, she now wants a monkey, but has no idea where to find one. If anyone has any ideas, she would be thankful.

I really don't think you can anymore. I also had spider monkeys as pets when I was a kid......worst experience ever :sad2: The things I saw :scared1:

I think they are illegal to own in most states, except under special permit. I *think* it has to do with communicable diseases as well as protecting the animals.

I seriously thought this was going to be a David Letterman skit.

I see you are in WV, is your mother also located there? If so, WV has either banned or is in the process of banning the private ownership of monkeys.

These are wild animals prone to aggression once they reach sexual maturity and can pass diseases like hepatitis. Not something for you to have as a pet. I would recommend volunteering at a local zoo instead.

My SIL had one many years ago and Andrew was a walk through terror :sad2:

Actually, I just saw an episode of Hogan Knows Best on VH1. They are friends with a lady in Florida who tries to find home for baby monkeys and "adopts" them out. The episode was called Monkey Business.

Perhaps if you do some research you may be able to find who the woman in Florida is that facilitates these adoptions.

Hope This Helps.

I thought this was going to turn out to be a joke when I opened this thread! All I could think of was the episode of King of Queens where they renew their vows and he wants to have a monkey as his best man. It is a running thing throuhout the whole show that he wants a monkey since he has mentioned it a few times in the past.

I am not trying to flame, but IMO someone who has 'no idea' of how to acquire a pet monkey is not qualified to care for an exotic animal like a monkey. It's not like a dog or cat, they require special handling/care and only the very most knowledgeable should be allowed to care for them, IMHO. I really would suggest she adopt another kind of animal.

Wow I didn't even know it was legal to own a monkey!

I have no idea why she wants one. When she was younger, one would pee on people (once it actually jumped on a neighbors head, he was bald, and peed on him). Another would bite people. I keep reminding her of this, but she doesn't listen.

I will tell her they are banned in WV, although she will probably still want one.

poohandwendy,

She has experience with monkeys. She had three of them as pets previously. I don't see why she needs to have one, but I promised I would ask here, since I was sure someone would know. I know you weren't trying to flame. :)

Thanks All!

I understand that, but having one as a pet 40 years ago, as a child, is a world of difference from being the sole provider of their care now. I guess I just would suggest for anyone wanting to get involved with exotic animals to do really extensive research on them beforehand.

Obviously a moot thing because of the laws in WVa, LOL

My boyfriend Ross had one for a while. Cute little thing he called Marcel. Marcel was such a handful, like changing the TV so it only played in Spanish. Did you know that Urkel in Spanish is Urkel?

But alas, Marcel reached sexual maturity and we applied to many zoos around the country. Finally got into San Diego. Last I heard he was a movie star in some movie about a virus outbreak.....

Then you probably shouldn't be helping her with this. And I also don't mean this as a flame, but I agree with PAW. That was actually the first thought that popped in my head: if she has no idea how to obtain one, she shouldn't be owning one. Although I really don't think she "knows what she's doing" if she'll still want one even if it's illegal.

I also hate to ask this, but how old is your mother and how is her health?

Spider monkeys have a lifespan of 20 years or more. What would happen if she passed on or had to move into assisted living?

Also, where is she going to find a vet for this monkey?

Finally, she may have a lot of difficulty getting homeowner's insurance with the monkey. Most won't cover people with "exotic" pets.

I'm not trying to be rude, just wanted to bring up something else to consider.

Didn't Marcel poop in Monica's shoe once? The pilgrim ones (as opposed to the left one, like Phoebe thought) ...? And, he liked to hump furniture, too, didn't he?!
