Any idea how much cakes are? Has anyone ordered them?

I'm going to Disney with extended family in October. Two of my nieces who are going have birthdays within 3 weeks of when we will be there so I wanted to do something for them while the whole family was there.

I put the celebration on the reservation at Crystal Palace since that is one place the whole group (9 total) will be eating all together. I was thinking I would order a cake. How big are the cakes? I think it may be better to get two small ones for two reasons: 1) Most of the family prefers chocolate, but my mom isn't allowed to eat chocolate due to the caffine content. 2) my nieces have very different taste in characters, one loves Nightmare before Christmas and the other the Princess and the Frog so it would be easier to do separate cakes to have both themes (unless its like a sheet cake and they are able to do half and half)

Has anyone ordered before? How much did what you order cost? Was it easy to work with Disney for this?

We ordered a "standard-issue 'celebrate today'" cake Saturday. It was $21 and served 8. See http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/celebrations/customizations/

They assured us that all we had to do was ask for it at the desk and they would have one. They (Teppan Edo at Epcot) said they would check, and sure enough they did. I was a little worried about having to 'check' when it was supposed to be 'for sure'.

Specialty cakes are a different deal, if that's what you're looking for.

Thanks for the info, I'm not sure if I want to do the standard one or not it kinda depends on how much the special ones would be. I also would prefer not to have to ask when I got there because I want it to be a surprise. Then again with 9 of us I"m sure I could convince another adult to make sure all 3 kids (the birthday girls and the other one so she doesn't ruin the surprise) are out of earshot.

Specialty cakes are cha-ching. Check the Cake Chatter thread for more specific prices & awesome pictures. I've seen specialty cakes anywhere from $65-$200+ on there. For our last girls trip we were celebrating a milestone birthday for someone in the group & she ordered a specialty cake to be delivered to our room at BLT...I know it was over $100 but she wouldn't say just how much over!

Definitely a cake chatter question. Unfortunately, on MK property you cannot get a specialty cake. This is typically done at the resorts, mostly Contemporary and GF. We did a specialty cake at the GF for my sister's bday. We ate at Narcoosees and had it delivered there to eat after wishes. It was a Haunted Mansion theme since my sister was born around Halloween. It was an 8 inch and cost around $120 (that includes tax). It was worth it though! It had chocolate buttercream as the icing with a chocolate mousse and fresh raspberry filling. Yum! We received it early in the trip so it could be stored (barely fit) in our resort fridge and eaten throughout. We nibbled on it here and there and actually finished it up. It was quite a feat!
