I remember this past October when I was on SE (which was my first time) I looked down at a certain point and it seemed like we were pretty stinkin high up.

Exactly how high does that ride thing go???

Sandy :)

According to Wikipedia...

the dome is 180 feet high with the highest point in the ride being 163 feet high. However, there is not like a straight drop of 163 to the bottom at that, or any point in the ride.

These links will give you a bit of a look inside.......

Cool pics - reminds me of the construction of the Death Star!

Good answer Dan. I've often forgotten that I was inside a giant sphere while riding Spaceship Earth. Sometimes I just ask myself "Where am I?"

High enough that it requires an air beacon. Captain Mike told us all about it during out Illuminations cruise. They try to disguise it with the other lights around it but if you look carefully you can definitely see it!

I know, not exactly what you were looking for but still useless, fun trivia nonetheless!

There is a point on the ride where you can tell you're at the highest point since you can see the top of the dome, you definitely get to that height of 163 feet since you can tell you're about those 17 feet down.

I know this may be silly, but has anyone's ear's popped or felt lightheaded from going so high?

LOL, remember you are in Florida, which is very close to sea level. You're not likely to get an ear pop at 160 feet or so.

By the way, I have a hard time believing both the 180 and 163 feet numbers are correct. When you are at the top of the ride, you are MUCH more than 17 feet below the top of the sphere.

Is that why they added the "Mickey Epcot hand" with the flashing lights?

Its only BECAUSE of the "Mickey Wand" that the beacon is needed or was added.

Anything below 200 feet tall does not need an air beacon.

All of the "mountains" and tall icons at WDW are a bit shorter than that.

A notable exception is the Mickey Wand.

If they tore it down, the beacon could go with it.

I believe that the 17 foot mark is about right. Last year we were on SE and experienced one of their "stops," before you enter the "Big Room" with the moon and stars. The track is climbing continually to a certain point and then is actually on its way down in the Big Room (most people assume that the Big Room is the top, but next time you ride it, keep your eye on the track and whether you're climbing still). Being stopped right at the apex of the track, I could see the ceiling and guess that the Wikipedia entry is just about right... :goodvibes
