I normally don't watch the show but I did watch last night's episode "You Say Dubai, I Say Hello" because my good friend's son, Ryan Bow (quite famous in the Marial Arts world, especially in Japan) and his wife, Adrian, was the couple looking for an apartment in Dubai. Really neat to see someone I know on a show like that. :) They didn't choose the apartment I thought they would though. :(

The entire show is scripted (fake). Basically the homeowner or renter does most if not all of the leg work, rents or buys the place and then the show comes in afterward to film a "recreation" and I use the term loosely. You can google this.

I still like watching it to show the different international homes, apartments and rent costs.

We record them and watch later so we can zip through the commercials. :)
We will watch the Dubai episode tonight. Very cool that it's your friend's son. :goodvibes

All of the HGTV shows are fake and scripted. But I still like watching some of them anyway. I didn't see HHI last night, but it's a semi-regular favorite.

(I apologize for the abbreviations. ;))

Probably most "reality" shows are some measure of "fake." :) It was still fun to watch since it was my friend's son on the show. I've watched home-buying shows in Alaska, Hawaii and the Louisiana Bayou and always enjoy seeing the homes and which one the couple chooses.

This is fact. They won't film unless you've chosen a home already. But knowing this just ruins the fun. ;)

I actually turn off House Hunters International as soon as it comes on. I just don't like it. On the other-hand, I watch House Hunters on Netflix like it's my job. It's a very entertaining show! In fact, I enjoy everything on HGTV...

A friend recently filmed Property Brothers. I knew it was fake/scripted, but I was still surprised at *how* fake/scripted it was. Still fun to watch her episode though.

:)

I like the shows too but just knowing that most of the homes that are shown to the couple were never in contention in the first place shows just how fake the shows are. Basically the couple buys/rents the place, contacts the show and a "realtor" comes in and shows them other properties and the couple pretends to pick one of the three. That's not a measure of fake, that's pure fiction.

Hawaii show is my favourite, just for the scenery.

Interesting. I should have known. What kind of renumeration is the couple receiving for appearing on the show?

We enjoy the shows for the locations, scenery and seeing properties in general.
The scripted stuff is a big shrug to me. If it bothered me, I wouldn't watch. As was pointed out above, most reality TV is scripted.

Very little/none, actually (as far as I know). What they got was really quick renovations. She was pregnant and they wanted renovations done before the baby came and with the six-week work time with Property Brothers, that could happen.

Some of the more interesting things included removing the flag from the flag pole in the front lawn so that location couldn't be easily determined and the fact that the prices quoted change depending on what market the show is playing in (i.e. they are changed to be in line with whatever market it is being shown in).

I don't mind knowing all those shows are fake. I just like seeing house porn. How much buys what where......scenes from the various neighborhoods and cities or rural areas......the atrocious decorating taste some people have.....the staged bickering between the couples.....

That's us, too! And occasionally my husband will comment, "They should consider the feng shui of that property". :rotfl2:

Thanks. I've always wondered why anyone would want to be on the show. Having had a 6 week main floor reno turned into a 5 month job I can see why that would be an attractive incentive.

The Property Brothers' guys look so honest to me although I'm not always the best judge of character.

Just out of curiosity, are they in the US? I think some of these shows are filmed in Canada which confuses me because they put everything into US dollar amounts. Love It or List It is one of these shows.

I do love Property Brothers though. Care so share how much of it is real? Do they actually pick between two houses? I've always thought that buying a house takes a little longer than a week, which is what the show portrays, but then again, I've never purchased a home.

Property Brothers is filmed in Canada. I believe mostly in the Toronto area.

Why do you think they are using US dollars? I've yet to see that.

Wait so it's not in US Dollar amounts? I guess they've never said otherwise, I just always assumed it was...

And Property Brothers was in the New Jersey, New York area recently because I told someone to go on the show.

I just found this on Wikipedia:

Property Brothers is a Canadian reality television series that is produced by Cineflix. It airs on W Network (Canada) and HGTV (US). It airs as My Dream Home in Australia on LifeStyle Home, in New Zealand on ChoiceTV, as Irmãos a Obra in Brazil on Discovery Home & Health, as Cudotwórcy in Poland on Domo+ and as La casa de mis sueños in Spain on Divinity and on Decasa. Identical twin brothers Jonathan and Drew Scott (born 28 April 1978) help home buyers to purchase and renovate "fixer-uppers."

Drew and Jonathan Scott also have several other shows: Brother vs Brother, Buying and Selling, and Property Brothers at Home in addition to Off Topic with the Scott Brothers, a 13-week, 60-minute lifestyle radio series which aired on Corus Radio. Drew is a real estate expert who scouts neglected houses and negotiates the purchases. His brother, Jonathan, is a licensed contractor who renovates houses. Together, the Property Brothers help families find, buy, and transform fixer-uppers into dream homes on a strict time-line and budget.

Each episode starts with the brothers showing buyer/buyers a house with everything on their wish list that tends to be over their budget. Afterwards, the brothers show them fixer-uppers usually with potential to become their dream home. After the buyers narrow it down to two houses, the brothers use computer-generated imagery to reveal their re-imagined vision of the home after renovations.

The show has a condensed time-line of the renovations. Typical of home improvement shows with an accelerated renovation format, the brothers have three experienced crews work on the house to finish in the 4-7 week timeline. They work with real project budgets set out by the buyers. The buyers own the property and pay for the remodelling, but the show is able to provide about $20,000 to $25,000 worth of furnishings.

The first season was recorded in Toronto, Ontario. For the third season, the show was recorded in Austin, Texas, for half of the year and Canada for the rest.[7] The brothers returned to their hometown of Vancouver, British Columbia to film in 2013. In 2014, the show recorded several episodes in Atlanta, Georgia, and in 2015 they will be filming in Westchester County, New York.

Oooo, interesting! I always wondered if the show gave them some extra stuff for free. And it is coming to the US! Thanks for the google search that I was too lazy to do. ;)
