A 5.4 quake shook the midwest this morning as I was reading the Disboards. There was about 10 seconds of shaking...thought something terrible was happening to my house...whew...all is well...

We felt it here in Louisville, KY. Actually woke me and dd up. The windows were rattling and the bed was shaking. It lasted about 30 sec.

Count me in. I thought one of the kids jumped into my bed at around 4:30 but got up turned on the news and heard about the quake. Cool way to start my morning.

i'm glad everything is okay with you. :). no damage is good

That was fun! Of course our prayers are that nobody was hurt (haven't read the news yet), but originally being from So. Cal and transplanted to IN by my employer, it kind of felt like when I was a kid again...

We sure felt it here in St. Louis!! It woke dd and myself up out of a sound sleep.:scared1: We met in the hallway; I stood with her in the doorway, which is what I heard you were supposed to do, I think. It seemed like it lasted forever, but I heard it was less than a minute. No damage reported here, either. I think they were out checking bridges and stuff this morning, but no reports of any major damage. I called dh right away, as he was already heading to work. He didn't feel anything since he was driving, and he didn't believe me at first, until he said they were talking about it on the radio.

Wow! I can't believe how far this thing spread out!

We just had an aftershock here! I heard rumbling and then my computer screen started vibrating! Boy, isn't this an interesting day! I hope everyone is safe and sound!

Has anyone felt an aftershock yet? I am packing because we are moving tomorrow and I was sitting at my desk packing stuff there and started to hear a little rattling and felt a little shake. Just curious if anyone else felt anything yet. I know that aftershocks can be felt quite awhile later.

Good to know I wasn't imagining things. I totally agree this is one wild day for us.

They just said on our news here that there have actually been at least 4 aftershocks but this last one was a 4.5 and that is why we felt it. The ones prior to this have only been around 2.

I am in Carbondale, IL and we really felt the 5.2 and the 4.5, the dog was not liking it at all.

I was at the gym here in Indy when it hit, and nobody there felt anything! I was reading the closed captioning on the local news (while on the treadmilll! I'm multi-talented!) and looked around to see if lights were swinging, but nothing. I figured everything must be ok, tho, because the mayor was there working out, as well!

I did feel the aftershock around 11:15......I was sorta sad I missed the main quake.

This is a cool site to see the seismograph readings... http://www.uky.edu/KGS/geologichazards/equake3.htm

It woke everyone up here too!! :scared1: We just had some pictures fall off the wall on the 3rd floor of our house, but everyone and everything else is fine. :worship: What a way to wake up. The kids were not quite sure what was going on, at first they thought it was a tornado and they were headed to the basement. No one could go back to sleep after it, not afraid, just excited that something like that had happened. It was their fist earthquake! We all enjoyed a BIG breakfast together, something that we don't get to do too often during the week. :grouphug: :grouphug: I am just greatful that it was a "minor" one and there were not wide spread damage or injuries.

We have had several aftershocks here. The largest was around 10 am on Friday. I spent this evening going through my "Disaster Kit" and updating some of the things in it.

disaster kit?. dare i ask what's in it?

I have some of the necessities of everyday life stored in a large plastic (new of course) garbage can with a snap tight lid. I keep water, non-perishable food, manual can opener, flashlights, matches, change of clothes for everyone including a pair of shoes. I also have personal hygiene items, first aid supplies and some basic cleaning supplies. I have made copies of important documents such as birth certificates, social security cards, and copies of our credit cards. I keep cash in there too. I also have things just to keep us entertained like card games and small travel games. I am sure they are more things I need to put in there, but I just tried to think of items that we might need to live on for a few day in case of a disaster. You can get more ideas for your own disaster kit on the American Red Cross website.

After seeing the crisis the families of Katrina endured, I knew you could never be too prepared. I live nearly 1,000 miles from the ocean so a hurricane is very unlikely, but we have had earthquakes, tornados, and floods all in the past year. Luckily they were not major disasters. Some people think I am crazy, but I just want my family to be taken care of when we have a disaster

well, i think that is a really good idea (you never know when you will need it)

might try and get 1 myself

My daughter called me from Louisville, KY Sorry, to tell me all about the earthquake. We had lived on Guam experiencing many earthquakes with the largest being 7.5 She said that in Ky it feels worse because the buildings and houses are different. Louisville is my home so I remember all of the fault line information. I guess now is prime time for earthquakes in that region. Just hope they never cause power outages.... we were on the 85 degree humidity filled island for 2 days without air conditioning because of the 7.5 earthquake. Not fun!!

I didn't feel anything. But supposedly Des Moines felt it. I feel left out. :sad2:
