Hi,

My DD16 is going to be a junior this year and has just gotten her new schedule. She has been placed in an Advanced Functions class. Her classmates are telling her she should skip that math and go ahead into Pre-calculus. She is torn and does not know the difference between the two. She did well in both Geometry and Algebra II and I do not know if she should request a schedule change or not.

Can anyone provide any insight for a parent who has little higher math experience.

Thanks!!

PS: She is not sure what she wants to major in college yet. But I doubt it will be in the sciences field. She is very smart, but has a BIG creative side and I see her using that in her daily life more than say an engineer, doctor, etc.

At both schools and work at and the school my son attends, the nexct class would be Pre Calc or honors Pre Calc. Good luck

Our school would be some form of pre-calc as well. It isn't so much what she wants to major in as it is how it looks on her transcript to GET in. I would ask for a schedule change.

I would talk to her guidance counselor to find out why she was placed in this class.

I would stick with Pre-Calc.

My son is taking Algebra III/Trig after Algebra II. I wonder if his school has a pre-calculus?

It's been a while since I taught high school math (11 years ago) but I'd go with pre-calc.

edited: I just did some research on Advanced Functions math since it wasn't a class offered when I used to teach.

It does sound more like a class that is geared towards kids who will go to college but not necessarily major in something that is math related. Many of the universities are now requiring four credits of high school math to get in (it used to be 3 credits) and I think this type of course was created for those students who are college bound but not big in math.

So, honestly, if she does fine in math, I'd say go with pre-calc. Who knows, mayb she'll take her creative side and do something with architecture or engineering design, both need math. And this will set her up to take calculus her senior year. But, I wouldn't stress too much about the Advanced Functions class. I would talk to her someone though and make sure she is on track to have all the credits she needs to get into college.
