So it's 36 days until we leave

I hate flying and one thing that will help me survive the six :scared1: flights that I will be doing is having a few great books to get stuck into.

I LOVE reading and will try anything, apart from chick lit :rotfl2:

Some of books/authors that I have really enjoyed to give you a flavour for suggestions...

Margaret Atwood
Harry Potter & Twilight series
The Time Traveller's Wife
John Wyndham
Jane Austin :cloud9:

So... what are your favourite books and authors and do you have any suggestions for me?

there is a really long What did you read last thread- you'll start seeing lots of common good reads- good luck

A couple I've enjoyed just recently are

One Day by David Nicholls
The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom

My favourite author at the moment is Jodi Picoult, I read her book Nineteen Minutes recently and couldn't put it down! I can't seem to get enough of her books, and have been scouting them everywhere now.:thumbsup2

I've also been reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels by Charlaine Harris, the books are what the TV series True Blood is based on, I loved Twilight, and these are good too.:goodvibes

I read quite a lot but the ones I have just finished and would recommend are

Full Dark, No Stars by Stephen King - The stories in this one are a little out of the ordinairy, still suspense/thriller/horror but just different.

Retromancer by Robert Rankin - Writer of far fetched fiction - There is big and evil magic abroad upon the face of the Earth. History has been changed. The Germans have won WWII. America is a nuclear wasteland. And worst of all, the breakfast menu at The Wife's Legs Cafe in Brentford is serving Bratwurst rather than the proper big boys' British banger. Very funny read, with running gags and recurring characters, the more you read the more you get the inside jokes which must be a tradition, or an old charter, or something.

Wow some excellent suggestions - thanks all! I'm off to town to check them all out in the book shop. I had been thinking of trying Sookie Stackhouse books as I loved True Blood! Retromancer also sounds like something I'd like. I'll check the other community boards too - very excited :)

When we were in Orlando last year my Sister left me her book to read on our Disney Cruise - The girl with the dragon tattoo by Stieg Larsson. At the time I said I probably wouldn't have time to read it, but once I started reading it I was hooked and I couldn't wait to get home to borrow the other two books in the trilogy :goodvibes

I loved both of these. I also liked
We need to talk about Kevin by Lionel Shriver
and I am reading
Before I go to Sleep by A J Watson

If you liked The Time Traveller's Wife, how about Her Fearful Symmetry by the same author? I read it last year and couldn't put it down.

I absolutely love Sophie Kinsella's book...my favourite being 'Can you keep a secret?', Shopaholic books are also good. Just read a Marian Keyes which is a similar style of writing also.

Room by Emma Donoghue - really good!

I love the Twilight Saga books and the True blood series.

I've also just started reading PC Cast's "Goddress" and "Partholon" books and am really enjoying them.

Other authors I read are James Pattison, Kathy Reichts and Karin Slaughter.

I really enjoyed Outlanders by Diana Gabaldon

I've started making a list so that I won't run out of books for a while :) I popped into oxfam today and picked up two new books - The Testament of Gideon Mackenzie by James Robertson and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by mark Haddon. I've heard the second one is great, had never heard of the first one but the front cover is beautifully illustrated and it really caught my attention!

I read 'curious incident' about 5 years ago and enjoyed it (i'll have to find it and re-read it again) i've not heard of the first one but i'm intrigued about the front cover, i'll have to go and google it ;)
