None of the dining plans are about savings.
It depends on the price and how you normally vacation.
We don't feel obligated to dine differently because of the dining plan.
Without a plan, we would still dine at a signature each evening and order three courses (likely one appetizer and share, but we obviously each get our own entree and we each get our own dessert since our tastes are different.)
Since we prefer dinner around 7:30-8:00PM, we'd also do a table service lunch long before around noon time.
For us, the deluxe dining plan during
free dining saves us money.
As a couple upgrading to deluxe during free dining:
$99/night from Regular to Deluxe
$135/night from Quick Service to Deluxe
$155 Average for 3-courses @ a Signature Location. (7:45PM)
$75 Average for 3-courses @ a 1TS lunch location. (12:00PM)
$20 Average daily in snacks in the parks.
$10 equivalent in resort soft-drinks
$260 Daily Average OOP
We eat breakfast cheap and out of pocket.
With a 7.5 hour gap between sit-down meals, the food isn't on-top of one another as some guests claim to be (not sure how unless scheduling tight).
Also, three courses is not some insane amount of food as people tend to cite with the dining plan, but get three plates of food at a buffet. But, let's go with their argument of being "a ton of food" and say out of pocket, we choose to split an appetizer and dessert at lunch and dinner (no way halfing an app/dessert and getting an entree is a 'ton of food'.).
Going lighter by splitting an app/dessert, based off the menu's, we'd save $45, so the that goes down to
$215 Daily Average OOP.
With a $99/night or even the $135/night to cover dining, we're saving $80-$115, or $500-$700 for the entire trip. But for us, we'd average $260 a day, so we're saving $600-$750 a week depending if we stay at a deluxe or value.
