United has flights through them for our trip that are not on their own website. How is customer service if a change is needed?

Do NOT book through a third party (Expedia, Travelocity, Costco, etc). IF there is any issue (and a change would be an issue), you can't talk directly to the airline, you have to go through the 3rd party. I bet if you go through the booking process (up to the point where you enter your CC info), at some point, Travelocity will come back and say "that flight is not available".

Use the 3rd party for comparison shopping, THEN go to the airline's website and book. You can also call the airline and say "Travelocity says you have flight 1234 leaving at 10:28, but I don't see it on your website".

Agree with not booking 3rd party. A friend has a mess when their American Airlines flight booked through third party changed and the third party accepted the change on her behalf. She cannot do the changed flight and American will not work with her because she accepted the change and she cannot get it fixed through her third party either so far anyway.
