My son has been on doxycline for severe acne. It has helped with some of the inflammation and redness, but not enough. Today on tv I saw ad for 'Oracea' for acne and rosacea treatment. It claims to be better than doxycline. Any have any experience? Doxycline is dirt cheap. I assume Oracea is much more expensive, but if it works I'd be willing to pay more.
Thanks.

We were at our wits end with my sons acne. We were going to buy proactive.

We listened to the lady talk about how important moisturizing is when using acne treatment because your skin will produce more oil to moisturize your skin if it gets dried out from acne treatments.

We then went to the drug store bought a much cheaper system neutrogena which also has a moisturizer with it.

What a change I didn't think it would work so that little tidbit of information has changed his skin dramatically.

No experience, but I thought Oracea was for rosacea? Has your son been diagnosed with this as well?

The prescribing information says it only treats the blemishes associated with rosacea, and not the redness, and that it is only for adults.

Hopefully you can find a dermatologist who can help him.

I just caught the end of the commercial, but I was sure I heard it was for treating acne. So then I went to my computer to look it up. While it does mention acne, it does seem more geared to rosacea according their website. So I figured I would ask about here. (You all know something about everything here!)

We tried Proactiv without much success. So our peditrician prescribed doxycylcine and after awhile added retin-A. Still not seeing great results. I feel awful for him.

Go see a dermatologist.

My son went for mild acne and they prescribed Retin-A and another ointment that he was to use daily. Gosh, I forget the name and am too lazy to go upstairs to the bathroom. The derm told me that this cream was for mild acne. He said if it didn't work, there were two more options of creams. We didn't even get into oral medications. I probably wouldn't mess with the pediatrician anymore. Severe acne is probably out of their arena unless they happen to have a special interest.

So did the Retin-A help him? My DS has only been using it for about 3 weeks. I don't know if that is long enough to see results or not. I guess I'll be looking for a dermatoligist. There's never a quick fix for anything. Unfortunately.

Edited to add: His skin where it is clear looks tight and shiny. (maybe I should borrow the retin-a for my wrinkles)

Epiduo? My son takes the doxy and uses the Epiduo. It is helping but it isn't gone completely.

For years my son used doxycycline and benzyclin. It would work and then he would stop using it and break out all over again. Kept going back to the dermotologist and he kept saying accutane. Older son was on that and he advised younger one not to use it. Since he is an adult I let him decide, after reading all of the side effects he decided he wasn't interested. Skin seemed to clear up but now is broken out again went to a different dermotologist and she prescribed duac and minocycline. He is having an allergic reaction which we think is the minocycline so back to doxycycline. I think after awhile the body becomes immune to the medicine and you have to try something else for awhile. DS is 26 and is disgusted because he feels he is to old to still have acne.

::yes::
Plus it seems like no one thing works for everyone. Lots of trial and error. It is just such a confidence killer for these young people. My son says it doesn't bother him, but I think deep down it must.
