Any experience with blood found in urine during urinalysis?

UGH. I was so hoping the first test was a fluke. Had it repeated last night and hematuria found again. Doctor referred me to a urologist. My father had renal cancer so this is a bit stressful, although I know this does not mean I have it. COuld be stones also...Dr. said they will probably want to a cystoscopy which sounds like TORTURE. Has anyone experienced this? Thanks.

There could be many reasons for this. Best to get it checked out. Good luck!

I am one of those people that mostly *always* has this--ever since I was a kid. My mom has it too so it is a familial type of thing.

I did go to a urologist many years ago and was told that "some people get this." I had an in-office procedure that filled my bladder with water and he did look up there. I don't think it was the "full up" cystoscopy though because I think they put you under for that?

I've also heard that if you are perimenopausal or menopausal this can also be an issue because the urethra and surrounding tissues start to atrophy and they can shed red blood cells.

Ditto. I've had blood in my urine at almost all of my urinalysis tests. I do get 2-3 urinary tract infections per year as well. I've had a battery of tests & ultrasounds because of that, and nothing more has ever been found. My family doc & urologist say the same as above - it's just something I have to live with. My mom is exactly the same way as well. I actually carry a referral for a urinalysis in my purse, as well as an RX for Macrobid, so I don't even have to see the doctor when I feel one coming on. I get the test, get the RX filled & then the doc calls to let me know if it's just a routine UTI or if something else is off.

Thank you. Well, no bacteria found and I have no symptoms of a UTI. It would be pretty bad by now I would think since the first test was over 2 weeks ago.

i'm another one who has blood in the urine almost all the time. i've had ultrasounds, ct scans and multiple x-rays, as well as 2 cystoscopies (1 last year) and they're not bad. cystoscopy only takes a couple of minutes and is no worse than a pelvic exam. there's never anything wrong with my bladder, it's just one of those things.

This is the same as dd. They found some at 5 and of course, I freaked out. They've done all the tests, haven't found anything, and she's never complained of any problems. The trace amounts are still there.

If you google "microscopic hematuria" you can probably get more detail on it. They don't talk much about the "harmless" type, but as you can see, it is pretty common just from some of the responses here already.

I don't want to scare you, but sometimes it is something. This happened to my brother not even 2 years ago and he had bladder cancer. It was caught very early and removed. It may be nothing, but it may save your life too.

Do you take any blood thinners? Coumadin or Heparin? Did you have any recent surgery where you may have taken them?

I have had blood in my urine numerous times and even spent hours at the ER with extreme amounts of blood. Cystostopy is easy. Mine took maybe 5 minutes. The blood in my urine was determined to be from an infection that had already cleared up.

Other reasons could be injury, kidney stones, a viral infection, a fall on your rump, benign cysts/tumors, diabetes, hypertension. Then there is the others that you don't want to worry about at this time. Take it one step at a time. And don't forget to keep drinking fluids. No matter what, it helps to clear your system.

Add me to the club. I always have blood in my urine. In my case, it is because I have some tiny tears in my bladder wall. They have cauterized them in the past but the blood remains. Obviously it could be something serious but remember there are plenty of other minor reasons for blood in the urine. I know it is hard, but try not to worry.

No. I do take Enbrel for psoriatic arthritis which has been associated with some cancers, but not urinary tract as far as I know.

absolutely. My father's cancer was found because he fell at work and went for tests. He had no symptoms with a grapefruit sized tumor.

Hi, Michele!

When I worked at the hospital clinic, our doctor would get very alarmed when blood was found in a man's urine, but didn't worry at all when it was found in a woman's urine. I don't know the reasons exactly, but I gathered that blood in a woman's urine is no big deal, but it can be when found in a man.

Reading the responses here certainly prove that point.

Hi, how are you and your family? I'll see what urologist says on the 30th.

I would certainly recommend having a battery of tests at least once but there is a good chance that they will find nothing or, at the worst, something pretty minor. I have had blood in every urine sample I have given for the past 40 years. I had all the tests and nothing was found.

As it turns out, my father, sister, daughter, grandson and nephew all have the same thing. No one knows what causes it and the longevity of the problem without anything developing has created a situation that is handled mostly without alarm unless it is a new Doctor. Get the tests, they aren't that bad, other than slightly embarrassing and it could ease your mind considerably.
