Okay, I saddened when I read Maelstrom would be closing in favor of a Frozen "attraction" (note: no where has it been written this will be a "ride"!).

I immediately texted the news to family and DIS friends (not a Tweeter. just could never get into it).

Then, within what, one day, I learned that Maelstrom will close on Oct 5!!!!:scared1:

I feel a need to get there and ride it one more time. I've always loved Maelstrom. Maybe it's my scant Norwegian heritage. Mostly, I know, it's because I love flume (in this case, "flume-type") rides, and because this is one of the few "rides" in Epcot. But I loved the theming of Maelstrom, and I was one of those geeks who still sat around after the ride to watch the film (for the 45th time...).:rolleyes1

I've been seriously seeing if I can cram in a few WDW days in the next two weeks (no, I don't live in FL!).

Who's with me?!!:crazy::dance3::rolleyes:

We already have a trip scheduled 9/21-27, otherwise I would have probably been in the same boat!

PS, I am also a "Yankee in Virginia." ;)

I've done Maesltrom twice (maybe three times) in my last 10+ visits.

Couldn't care less about it's pending termination.

:thumbsup2 Love the idea of your "emergency" trip to say goodbye.

I remember our last Disney trip back in November of 2012 we had to make sure to get in one last ride on Snow White before it closed for good.

Thankfully we already had a trip planned for this month so we will also do one last ride on Maelstrom to say goodbye...and we may even stay for the movie too! :lmao:

We also have to plan this upcoming short trip around some refurbs. I know there are a few that either open from refurb or close for refurb during our trip, so we'll need to make sure we experience them on those schedules too. :)

We leave in 3 days! Our first day is in Epcot - I'm feeling grateful for this - we love Maelstrom. We'll be riding it a lot.

My 5 year old calls it "the Viking Ride". ;)

Go for it!

I did watch it on Youtube the other day as a tribute. It's such an odd ride, but I did love it. I think if they had just changed that oil rig scene, it would have been really neat.

I made a trip down to Epcot this weekend to see Off Kilter and Maelstrom one more time before they close and before Food and Wine started, but I only live an hour away. If I lived out of state I certainly wouldn't have made a special trip down just for Maelstrom.

We are going to be there Oct 18th but alas, it will already be closed. We were there last December and had planned on riding the Maelstrom however as we entered the Norway pavilion, the kids decided it would be a good time to throw a fit so we bypassed. Regretting that decision now. Oh well.

We love the Maelstrom and the movie, its always been underrated. However with work and other issues there is no way to make it to WDW in time.

AKK

Arriving for my next trip Oct 4. guess the viking gods were looking out for me. I will be heading straight there.

Thanks for sharing, y'all!
I made a good faith effort, trying to bookend it with a business trip to TX (i.e., make a vacation pit stop on the way home!), but alas, not likely to work.

It would be nice to say goodbye. Fortunately, I have lots of fond memories to look back on (although, good idea about youtube!). :goodvibes

For those of you headed there in the next few weeks, enjoy! :cool1:

I sadly won't be able to go ride Maelstrom for the last time because I am not going anytime soon:( But I just found out yesterday that I might be going to Disney World next summer! Far away but now I get to plan the trip

We already have a trip planned but we did re-arrange some of our days so we could ride Maelstrom one last time before it closes a couple of days into our trip :cool1:

We'll be at Epcot on 10/3. I don't ride Maelstrom every time we're there, but I will this time! So sad...

Disney doesn't use the word "ride." To it, everything is an attraction.

The Frozen attraction will probably use the same ride track as Maelstrom, possibly it will keep the Viking boats, everything else will change.

I was already down for the first weekend of the Food and Wine Festival and have thrown in a couple of Maelstrom fast passes.

I've been mulling over a short MNSSHP/F&W trip, but it hasn't been coming together timing-wise. It was going to be Halloween, then Mid-October. Now I am wishing I could set it for before the Maelstrom closes. I'm not necessarily against the change, but it'd still be nice to give her one last ride!

We are here now and got to ride it on Saturday with a FP. The standby wait was 45 minutes! It was always a walk on in the past. I guess everyone has the same
Idea as you !

No doubt that the announcement of its discontinuation created a huge demand shock for Maelstrom.

Glad to hear she is going out with a bang!:goodvibes

Hey, I'm a nostalgic type. Change can be good. And I liked Frozen; I trust Disney to do an amazing job capturing a visit to the fictional Arrendale. I do hope they do a legitimate tie-in to Nordic culture.
