I'm just outside Birmingham. Right now we are among the lucky who still have power. Over 550,000 homes so far do not. They are expecting that figure to top 1,000,000 before it's over. The worst won't be over for 12 more hours or so, and already we have flooding, trees down, reports of tornadoes, and other such lovely things. We are prepared to be without power for a week. We have propane (for a coleman stove), charcoal, and over 40 gallons (!) of water. All out pets are in, and we are just waiting to see what happens.
I have just arrived at work. I'm not scheduled to be here until 4pm, but they said if you were going anywhere you'd better get there by noon, so here I am. (I'm not *working* obviously <g> I'm just here so I can start work at 4:00) The worst is supposed to be here at 2:00, but alreaady roads are closing due to flooding and downed live power lines. I've worked here 16 years and never been stuck at work before. I guess my time has come. I am scheduled to work today and tomorrow; I'm hoping to be able to go home tomorrow night when I get off. Otherwise, I will go home Sat morning. I didn't have much trouble coming in, but when I got here the wind was really picking up. They say we are getting gusts of 60mph! I feel pretty safe here at work, and we will not have to worry about flooding where our house is, and so far we don't have trees down (although our next-door neighbor has 2 down already) we worry about ours falling, but all we can do is wait. It's very frustrating.
Mobile has done better than expected. They still have major damage, but not the severe flooding everyone feared. The way Ivan came ashore, they said water was actually sucked out of the bay. As for Gulf Shores, that's where the eye came ashore. They had reporters out there this morning showing us the damage. They could not get further than the WaterWorld park. The ocean comes up to there!! It's almost a mile inland! Early reports say the FloraBama is gone and the outlets in Foley are heavily damaged. They cannot get to the beach (or where the beach used to be) to see what remains. We have friends and who live there and freinds and family who own vacation property there. I hope they are all okay.
Thanks for your thoughts and prayers.
