DH is in the "adventure" mood again and is ready to pack up and haul out to another area of the country to live. He's looking in Florence, SC, or the surrounding areas. How is the living out there? Weather, job market, culture, anything else.

I live in SC, but in Greenville. I've only driven through Florence. Have you ever been there? From what I've seen from the highway, there are good parts and bad parts. The part by the interstate looks nice and new. The older part doesn't look quite so nice.

The weather in SC is absolutely perfect. It's not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. It's nice being so close to the mountains and the beach, too. I absolutely love the people here. DH and I are transplants from the Dallas area, and we'll never go back.

I grew up in Florence. Moved away back in 88, but have noticed alot of changes as I drive through on my way to Florida. The weather was always hot in the summer and very mild in the winters. (in 8 years it snowed 1 time). Unless things have changed, the ecomomy was not good. There are good parts of the city and bad parts, but at least the good parts got better after I moved. My parents moved to VA after I graduated high school (South Florence High). I miss my friends. :( I miss Johns Drive-In cheeseburger box :(

I've been wondering about SC also. My dh doesn't want to move to FL, I don't think GA either, and I want to be someplace WARM! We have other considerations as well since our youngest may still be in school when we relocate.

Have you ever been there?

We haven't been there yet. When DH gets ready to move, he just throws a dart at the map and that's the area we check out next. Last year we visited St. George, Utah, but I didn't care for it. He made a really good choice with New Mexico, and it wouldn't bother me to stay here, but he's ready to move on. We'll probably visit SC within a month or 2.

I live near Charleston South Carolina and I can tell you that We have a little bit of everything. Beach's,Mountains, lakes, rivers, woods, etc. I live on one of the Santee cooper lakes. Some very good fishing here. Florence has grown alot since I was last there, but as with anywhere else, you have good and bad parts. It gets hot as heck in the summer, and not too cold in the winter. I say come on down for a visit and check us out.{hugs}mrsdash

P.S. Hello kermit:wave2: My family is from Greenville.

It's funny that other people mention SC being hot. I guess it depends on where you've lived and what you consider normal. I've lived in New Orleans, Houston, and Dallas. Compared to those cities, it's quite nice here, even in the warmer parts of the state. It is really humid here, but I don't find that it bothers me (except occassionally when I'm baking bread :D). If you've lived mainly in cooler climates, you may want to put off traveling here until about July so that you can get a better perception of summer.

I live in SC too! Just across the state line from Charlotte NC. I love it here- wouldn't want to live anywhere else. In 3 hours we can be at the ocean or in the mountains.

I went to college in Florence, SC, I would have stayed there after graduating but it didn't work out that way. That area has really changed since I lived there but I loved it.

To me the weather is perfect. It is hot in the summer especially August but spring and fall and really nice. Winters are good- it gets cold enough to feel like you have had a winter then it is over. An yes we do have snow. We had 17 inches of snow a few weeks ago- 7 days later my daughter wore shorts to school- go figure.

Wow! What a cool thread! LOL!

I live in upstate SC. On the border of SC/NC near Charlotte.
I went to college in Florence, it was a good place. I have friends that still live there and it seems to have grown a lot. It is only an hour or so from Myrtle Beach and not too far from Charleston.

SCMinnie ~ Did you go to Francis Marion? I graduated in 1994.

mrsdash ~ I grew up in Goose Creek ... near you!

Ahh the creek, lol. Goose Creek has grown so much it is almost part of North Charleston.{hugs}mrsdash

I don't live in SC but my son goes to Clemson University-he loves the weather and the surrounding area. Moving to the south from Colorado was something of a culture shock for him but he is learning to really like it.

Our family moved south from NJ to SC almost two years ago and we LOVE it here::yes:: We live on the mainland but very close to Hilton Head Island. The weather would have to be the #1 draw. I've been talking to my mom in NJ and while it's been snowing "back home" we've been sunny and in the seventies.
(Actually, I just looked out the window and it's 82 right now!) The area has been growing by leaps and bounds with it's proximity to HHI, Beaufort and Savannah, GA. I would highly recommend our area but unfortunately I can't give any recommendations about Florence if that what your husband has decided on.

I don't live in SC but darn close. The weather is hot but not as hot as some of the mid-western states. The humidity is probably the worst thing but you learn to adjust. What type of work does your DH do, that might be more of a limiting factor than anything else.

Hi,

We moved from NJ to the West Myrtle Beach area a year ago and love it. We're minutes to the beach and some great outlet shopping. The weather is wonderful as today it's 80 and sunny. I don't find the humidty or summer temperatures any hotter then it was in NJ. We're about 1 hour from Florence and as others have said, there's good parts and not such good parts. The best advice I can give you is to come check it out for a few weeks before you make the move.

Good Luck in whatever you decide
