Any difference between buying through Disney or resale?

I'm *really* partial to some of the older DVC villas - WLV, BCV or BWV... I'd like to buy points in some of those, and I understand from my brief talk with a DVC phone guide (Randy K.) that I can purchase points if they come available through Disney.

Is there any incentive for me to go through Disney rather than through resale?

It's a much quicker process if you go thru Disney (as long as you don't have to wait for the points initially). We did our first purchase as a resale. We made an offer March 21th and had access to our points on May 12th, approx. 7.5-8 weeks. We already purchased AKV points direct from Disney and had use of them immediately even though we haven't even closed.

What you can gain thru resale is a lower price and possibly banked points if you find a loaded contract. We received almost all 2007 points from the sellers that they had already paid the MF's on. You will have to go thru the ROFR period to see if Disney wishes to buy the points back. Oh - we also received a book from our resale agent so we got a gift too. :cool1:

What you gain from Disney is a quicker process and a DVC tote bag! You may also get the previous years points.....that just depends on what they have available. :thumbsup2

In the end....the resale process isn't bad - just takes awhile. I'm not at all sorry we did it. But it also was really nice to have the points immediately from Disney!

For those who need it, the Disney financing is very easy and attractive to use, too. Even those with poor credit are approved, usually with a bit larger required down payment. Don't think I have ever heard from anyone who was flat out refused.

I have done both Disney and Resale and it just depends on the situation at the time as far as which way I go. When we financing, we always used Disney.

You'll pretty much pay the going rate for DVC points for the older resorts; where with a resale, you might pay a lot less. No incentives will be offered. But you will close much more quickly and be in the system much more quickly if that's desired. And if you talk to your guide, there is a possibility of getting those times that are already booked up - don't know how they do it, but sometimes they can.

It's a much quicker process if you go thru Disney (as long as you don't have to wait for the points initially). We did our first purchase as a resale.

We did what KAT4DISNEY did, using resale for our 1st contract (in our case for 230 of OKW points which we got for $80/point), then later added on the 15-year OKW extension for $15 point (making it $95/point for OKW/2057 via resale instead of $101/point direct from Disney). We then bought SSR add-ons direct through Disney twice.

The experience of buying direct from Disney gave us a more "warm fuzzy" than buying through resale - and we've built a great rapport with a very friendly "fairy godmother" type guide. Aside from that, there really was no big advantage to buying direct - we might have saved a bit of $ by going resale on our add-ons but just didn't want the ROFR process again and trying to match our UY with resale contracts of varying sizes.

We found that it was simpler to add-on direct through Disney and that we would do add-ons that way again. However, our 1st contract was through The Timeshare Store . . . and we love what we got out of them too (OKW at a bargain).

In a nutshell, buying direct offers certainty and immediate availability of points (assuming DVC has points to sell at the resort you are interested in). And, as mentioned above, financing. The downside, obviously, is price.

Resale's big advantage is lower price (if not, why would you use resale?), and sometimes points that you get essentially for nothing.

Depending on the resort and size of the contract, the cost savings may be substantial. Our first purchase was 310 OKW points resale through the Timeshare Store -- we saved about $4,000 and we got 149 "free" points in the bargain.

The downsides of resale are that the entire process can take 8 weeks or so (sometimes less, sometimes more), and there is some uncertainty involved because you have to pass ROFR.

Some resale brokers also have financing arrangements available for their customers.

Once you are in, it doesn't matter HOW you purchased. I would strongly recommend researching both options.
