I am having extreme difficulties in getting any definate answers from Virgin on what I can take in my hand luggage!!!

I am an insulin dependent diabetic and need to take my insulin on holiday with me. Obviously this is liquid and I am unsure what to do.

One lady at Virgin told me that I could take it all as hand luggage as long as it was under 50ml. Another said I could only take what I needed for the flight and the rest would have to go in the hold!!!

When I explained about what would happen if my luggage got lost she finally agreed and said - i see what you mean, I will have to call you back!

When she did she said they were both right!!!!!!!! But it depends on the security guy you got on the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BAA states that only liquid medication you need for the flight is permitted the rest in the hold but that is no good for 2 reasons:

1- What if my luggage is lost
2- The insulin needs to be carried between 2-8C and that can not be guaranteed in the hold!!

HAve any other insulin diabetics travelled recently???? If so, what were your experiences??????

Instead of looking forward to my hols, I am dreading the security process!!!

HELP

My brother-in-law has flown twice (within the United States) recently and he took ALL of his diabetic supplies with him. He takes four insulin shots a day. I am leaving on the 3rd of October and I am also taking all of my medical supplies ( in my carry on bag) that I need for this trip...including all of my insulin. Just make sure you have the perscription with your name on it to prove it is yours. :thumbsup2

Perfectly ok to take medical sharpies and insulin, just as long as you have the prescription.

We fly in 2 weeks (tickets arrived yesterday :Pinkbounc ) and DW is an insulin dependant diabetic. We've never had any problems before (we flew a few days after 9/11), just make sure that you've got a note from your GP to cover you for taking 'sharps' and insulin in your hand luggage.

For this trip DW, due to the restrictions on liquids, has emailed the makers of her insulin to ask about storing it during the flight and now has it in black and white from the insulin manufacturers that the insulin MUST NOT BE STORED IN THE HOLD. If any ice crystals form in the insulin it becomes less effective/useless.

From our experiance the US is much more 'diabetic aware' than the UK (and France is ******* useless!).

I am an insulin dependant diabetic and I flew 5 days after the scare in August. I took my insulin pen on the plane with me with 1 spare cartridge. I then split the rest of my insulin between our suitcases just in case some of the luggage got lost. I also had a letter from my doctor stating that I was an insulin dependant diabetic. I had no problems with security. Hope this helps......

Bas Llama - but that is exactly what I dont want to do!! I am not putting any of my insulin in the hold.

I have tried today to get my doctor to write a note about it not going in the hold (temps, etc) and he won't!!!!!!

Agree about France - absolute nightmare!!! They had police, sniffer dogs and all sorts on me!!!

Leaving tomorrow, so I will try not to panic!! Although it has had an effect on my usual excitement to our trip!

Virgin allow your medication with a corresponding doctor's note.

Good job, my neice is 2 and diabetic, she'll also need a lot of juice for the flight (she is a HUGE drinker!)
