Any dentists out there?

Ok, so here's what I have done.

I was sitting at the PC eating a biscuit when a small part of my tooth came out. It is one of the very back teeth (part of the molar). Only a small part has came away.

I am scared of the dentist, always have been, but have made an appointment straightway to get this fixed.

I was just wondering what the procedure would be? I hate going to the dentist not knowing what he is going to do.

Please help me!! I'm a scared 20-something year old!!

Had something similar happen a few (3 or 4) years ago (when I was a 20 something too).

I had been sitting at my computer at work crunching on hula-hoop crisps. I (used to!) like crunching them along their strong access (i.e. them between my teeth, tube bit verticle)... There was a big crunch - part of it the hula-hoop breaking, part of it my tooth breaking! The destist later explained that it was because the tooth had decayed inside - the tooth was very weak (and would have gone sooner or later anyway), the hola-hoop just finished it off sooner!

Spoke to the dentist's receptionist, she made an "emergency" appointment for me a few days later. During that appointment the dentist basically cleaned up and put a temporary coating on it: to protect the tooth from further damage/decay. Then made a proper appointment for me a few weeks later. During this appointment he basically rebuilt my tooth - it now looks as good as new, if not better! I can't remember if I had to have an injection that time or no.

Obviously different amounts of damage to different teeth may be treated differently.

Don't worry. Basically I tend to think that the dentist isn't pleasant (particularly if you have to have an injection), BUT it is the best/only thing to do: not looking after your teeth - and seeing the dentist regularly and having occasionally "uncomfortable" treatment - will leave you a LOT worse off. We can all remember those photos of rotten/decaying teeth that they show you at school...

There is nothing to be scared off, just get it sorted out and take care of yourself .

Not a dentist I'm afraid, but a Dental Practice Manager.
If you're very lucky you might get away with just having it smoothed off, that's only if it really is only a small piece that's sheered away and isn't exposing anything so won't cause any sensitivity and if there is no decay present.
Other than that your dentist will probably just build it up with either amalgam(silver) filling or composite resin (white filling), the last one would have to be private - NHS won't fund white fillings in molar teeth I'm afraid, but if it's only a small build up it shouldn't be too expensive and hopefully you won't even need an injection for it.
I'm sure it won't be as bad as you're imagining.

The procedure in our Village would be:

Be asked to pay £200 a year for 1 check up and a polish on top of whatever treatment you need. Told to "Deal with it or else" and you cant get cheap treatment for the kids unless we get ripped off first.. I hate hijacking threads but i this dentist situation gets me really riled.

If you have the option (and can afford it) it is definitely worth going for the white resin build up if possible - does look SO much better. My reconstruction and fillings are white (well, they match the resin to the shade of your teeth) and you honestly wouldn't know that they WERE reconstructions or fillings - just looks like your natural teeth: very impressive. And, if you look after them, they will last very well

Firstly a big and secondly some

I lost some filling out of a tooth a few weeks ago, left it because I'm a big 'wuss' when it comes to the dentist, and ended up with a gum infection and a course of antibiotics

Got my 'brave head' on, all set to be drilled and filled and the dentist just smoothed it all up and popped me a little extra filling in to make it less sharp for food to catch under

I have a dentist appt tomorrow and I know how you feel, I also dont like the dentists and work myself up about it, big hug and hope it all goes smoothly for you.
