I used a non profit consolidation company years ago, it was the best thing I ever did. They took all of my unsecured debt and worked with the companies to either reduce or completely remove interest charges. The charge was $2 per month per card and since I had 3 cards I paid $6 a month but I saved much more than that because of how much they were able to get the interest rates down to. The company I used at the time was called Genus but now it looks like it is called American Financial Solutions. This was quite awhile back so not sure if AFS works the same way as Genus did but I am soo happy I did it. At the time I was swallowed up in debt and now I have been debt free ever since! My payment was fairly steep, I will never forget the pain of that $536 a month but in the end I am not sure how else I could have gotten out from under that cloud. An item to note, my credit is impeccable. I was never late on a payment and never missed any payments, I just owed soo much $$ that it was freaking me out (we had gotten married and had twins in the span of a couple of years that put us under). I still have impeccable credit as nothing changed there, the payments just went to my creditors from Genus as opposed to me.
ETA: Reading a bit more about AFS, it says they are a member of the NFCC (mentioned above).
