I'm wanting to take my 10 year old daughter to the American Girl Place. I've never been to Chicago so have some questions.

What hotel is nearby and isn't too expensive but not a dive either?

What else can we do on a long weekend visit?

When is a good time to visit? I was thinking of October since she will have a day off from school and we can go for a long weekend.

Thanks!

Oh my, there is TONS to do in a Chicago weekend. We are taking DD down for a weekend at the end of Aug and are going to get a City Pass which gets you into the 6 biggest attractions in the city including The Shedd Aquarium (with Wild Reef, the shark exhibit), the Field Museum and the Art Institute. The more places you go, the more you save. Also, Navy Pier is a must see and do.

As for hotels, it depends on how much you want to spend. Face it, anything neat the Mag Mile will be somewhat pricey. Try Hotel.com , they generally have good rates. Also, if you have AAA, they have a deal with Hilton and you can get good rates. We are staying at the Palmer House for under $150/night.

HTH and have fun!

Oh Oct will be nice. If you are staying downtown go to Navy Pier and the Children's Museum there The Imax theatre is also nice on the pier. We have stayed at the Hampton Inn nice but not to expensive

Can't help you with the hotel, but welcome to Chicago!

I don't recomend driving in the city, we're all nuts! plus parking is pure torture (and expensive) But Chicago has a good train system, the El (like a subway, but instead of underground, it's elevated, hence "the El") and a good bus system to. The hotel can advise you on the best way to get from place to place.

Chicago is a great place to go!
The Palmer House is GORGEOUS!!!
We've also stayed at a few hotels that are closer to the Americn Girl store....The Millenium Knickbocker & the Westin are both nice.

Shedd Aquarium and Navy pier are both great. We also like to eat at the Rainforest Cafe. :)

Have fun!

I read a previous thread where the person got a Chicago hotel room for $75-80/night through Priceline. I believe it was close to the Mile too.
