Any Canadians Just Recently Driven Thru I-4 Construction?

CAA TripTik takes us from I-95 down I-4, avoiding the 417. Has anyone from Ontario's GTA taken the I-4 through to WDW and/or Fort Wilderness and feel it's any different than the 400 series highways? We will be arriving on April 21st and still up in the air what to do, if Saturday traffic will be less congested than weekday madness. Is construction working on Saturdays?

We usually take the 417 at Sanford from I-4 even though it’s, on paper, a detour. But we have a sunpass and HATE I-4. Too many tourists who have no clue and too many Floridians who are reckless drivers on that one.

Sorry, also took 417 around Orlando this year (well, every year). Wasn't worth the risk of finding out to save $6 in tolls. I did chat with a couple at the pool, and they said I made the right choice, but I don't know what time or day they went through.

I think I'm over-thinking this and will reroute the GPS and printout to take the 417. I'm the navigator and it's one time he lets me tell him where to go lol.

We just left to come home to Toronto from Disney World last week. We left at 6:00 am in the dark and it was challenging travelling the opposite way through I-4 to I-95. The lanes are reduced in width due to construction and there's lot's of quick turns and ups and downs to maneuver. Without much slowdown in traffic early in the morning, the speed felt too fast for the type of construction and we felt pressured to keep up with the flow of traffic. This was an emergency trip with no planning so we just followed the Ford GPS. Now that we know about 417, I would try to avoid the construction and take the safer route 417 without hesitation. The construction extended longer than any construction I've seen on the 400 series highways.

Is 417 a toll road or not? Also what exit on I -4 did you use to get to 417? How about 429 instead, it appears to go west but it looks like you would need to drive 50 from I -4.

Yes, it is a toll road. You can grab a Florida SunPass at the Florida Welcome Centre which greatly reduces the tolls (with SunPass the full length is a bit over $6). I believe that 429 is toll as well, and doesn't directly connect to I-4 so not sure you would save anything going that way. You pick up the 417 at Sanford just after you cross Lake Monroe; don't have the exit number. From there it is a pretty clear shot down the East side of the city and across just South of the Airport, dumping you back out on the I-4 near Celebration (or exit at International Drive/World Center Drive for a straight shot up Epcot Center Drive).

@bankr63 - You mention that the SunPass greatly reduces the tolls.. How much of a reduction is there? We normally only travel to Florida once a year. We spend maybe $5 to $10 on tolls each year. We've learned from past experience that it isn't worth the time to try avoid toll roads - the time saved was well worth it. We've only paid cash for tolls in the past though. This year I investigated the SunPass at the Florida Welcome Center, but I wasn't completely clear on how it worked, and if there was any potential savings.

As with all things Orlando, the answer is "it depends". There are actually two tolling authorities in the Orlando area, SunPass (state wide) and E-Pass (Central FL only). They do inter-operate, and as a matter of fact, portions of the 417 are run by both (SunPass at either end, and E-Pass in the middle). With a SunPass transponder you get a better reduction on the SunPass section, about 40% IIRC. There is also a toll reduction on the E-Pass section over cash, but not as significant. You probably save about $2-3 per trip over cash tolls, but there is the added convenience of flying by the toll plazas at 70 MPH instead of stopping, waiting, and fumbling with change.

We have the mini-transponder in both our vehicles ($5 ea) which sticks to the windshield behind the rear view mirror. You can also get a portable transponder for $20 and move it to any vehicle. Note that they will mail the transponders to Canada (for free) so you can be setup before you leave. Once you get the transponder, you register it to your vehicle online at the SunPass site (they accept out-of-state plates). If you register a Credit Card for EasyPay, the transponder will auto-refill as you use the funds, my account is set to the minimum $10 threshold, $10 top up, so I always have between $10-20 tied up on the pass. You can also add funds to the account manually if you prefer, but I like it easy. The mini pretty much pays for itself on one trip, although I'm in it for the convenience more than the savings.

One additional benefit is you can also use the pass for parking at MCO. Helpful if you are picking up family flying in/out at different times.

It does sound like a lot, but it is really easy to setup, and IMO worth it for the peace of mind. We only use ours about once a year (or less), although if the states ever pay attention to the bill that passed congress a few years ago mandating universal tolling we may be able to use our SunPass throughout the United States including visits to the North East states.

Also, if you ever want to take the FL turnpike between Orlando and Miami, you can only do it if you have a transponder as there's no toll booth. We have the portable one that we paid 20$ a few years ago and we like not having to stop at tolls and I never worry about having coins since we have auto-refills.

Thanks to bankr63 and isabellea for the feedback. Decision made - we're going to get one of those mini-transponders on our next trip to Florida this August..
2 years ago we found ourselves on a toll road where at the end of the road there was just a toll box where exact change was accepted. We scraped through the ash-tray, pockets etc and couldn't pull together enough quarters to pay the toll. I took one of the brochures and mailed in a cheque for payment. The international currency fee on the cheque was $10 plus the exchange and amount. It ended up costing me $13+ for a $2 toll! Ever since that day, we've always made sure we had lots of US quarters available. The time for the transponder has come considering that we are going to Florida this upcoming August and March. (We're doing a week at the Disney Waterparks this August!)

We've had a Sunpass for the past couple of years and it's well worth the investment. We use it on our own car or a rental depending on how we get down there. Easy to top up online, you save a bit on the tolls, and it's especially useful if you head to Cocoa Beach or anywhere with multiple toll booths. We opted to take the 417 at Sanford on our way in over March Break, even though the I4 seemed to be moving well. We left for home at 5:00 am a week later, and judging by the amount of construction, I would avoid the I4, especially around Orlando, during daytime/ early evening hours.

And is the cost for the transponder have an annual fee applicable in subsequent years or one time only purchase price and then you refill with usable toll dollars? Does that sound like a clear question? I sometimes need to ask myself if anyone knows what I'm trying to say :)

No annual fee that I could see and we bought the transponder in 2015.

So I am totally confused, is the 417 a partial toll road that continues on to the end with no toll after paying a toll mid-way? I was just on the calculator trying to figure out how much for our MH towing an SUV. I see $7.50, does that sound right getting on at Sanford? (Cash)

According to my Sunpass account, my toll cost (2 axles) from Sanford to WDW was 4.01$ in July 2017.

March break 2018 my toll from Sanford to World Center Drive/I-Drive was $6.51. That is 2-axle. Each axle seems to add about 50% to the toll, so I think a quad axle (MH plus toad) will cost you about $13. (Note these are discounted prices with a Sunpass transponder).

ETA, and there are additional toll stations along the way. You will hit 5 from Sanford to my listed exit. I believe there is a 6th before exiting at Celebration if you go the full distance. Last toll probably no more than $1 as it isn't much distance.

417 is confusing because it starts as SunPass, switches to EPass, and then back to SunPass as the tolling authority. With interchangeable passes this isn't an issue for driving it, but it can be an issue when trying to determine the toll amounts.

EATA: just checked google satellite view. There are exit tolls (not transit/mainline tolls) at Osceola, Celebration, and before the final ending onto the I-4.

OK we've been here since Saturday and decided 5obrave out the I-4 construction. It wasn't as bad or any worse than driving the 400 series of highways around the Toronto area but that was mid-day Saturday with no workers or commuters.
