Has anyone ever rented DVC points? How did the process work?

We (dh, myself and dd's 7&6) are going on our 1st Disney cruise in March and are staying a few extra days after the cruise. Though I just submitted room only quotes for WDW resorts I know my DH would prefer not to do this as we spent nine nights at WDW in Aug. I was thinking Vero Beach sounded nice and relaxing after the cruise and it is still Disney, but I was not sure how I would go about booking it? Any advice?

We are renting points and leaving on Saturday for a 6 night stary at Old Key West in a 1 bedroom. I posted a request on the rent/trade board and then made arrgangements with the owner. I sent them a US money order and they put the reservation in my name and sent me the reservation. It went pretty smooth although I first sent by canada post registered mail and it never made it, so ended up sending the payment with UPS and cost was very reasonable. Just read all the posts on DVC planning board and read the FAQ's about rent before you do it. I was a little nervous at first.

rented points from a DVCer in Detroit, and made out just fine..we rented our points to a family from Ohio - they traveled just last month..

In both cases, our friends and us, rental contracts were used..they were sample ones from the DVC board that were amended to each particular situation.

When we rented our points, we asked for 25% up front, and the rest due 60 days before checkin. Some owners prefer the full amount up front, but I was comfortable with this particular poster, and felt ok with the time frame for making alternate arrangements if they couldn't use the points (we had stipulated that the 25% was non-ref)

I didn't post that we had points to rent. Just offered the rental terms to the family that we rented them to...and that's all:)

Like Lynz said, read the FAQ's very carefully, spend some time on the DVC Boards reading posts..if you find someone that has a confirmed reservation, (or points and availability is still ok for MArch) do a search on their previous posts, then contact them.

$10/point seems to be the going rate, but don't be surprised if you find that an owner wants $12 or more. But you might find some "fire sale" rates too:)

HTH!!

We have rented 3 different times from 3 different DVC owners (2 in States and one in UK). Have not had any issues and all times things have gone smoothly. We love the ability to stay in a "luxury" hotel for moderate hotel rates! Just make sure you understand payment terms and methods of payment up front. After transactions were completed, the owners would give me the DVC 800# to call the reservations desk to confirm the reservations were in our names and all other details like rental dates etc were correct. You have to have some trust in the process, but it is a wonderful way to get a great hotel room! Enjoy

We rented on 3 seperate occasions before we bought ourselves.

Each transaction went great. We paid $9 2x and $10 once. Ten dollars seems to be the going rate.

One Canadian here with points to rent. We have around 300 points for rent. $10 US a point. Take only what you need.

I have also rented points and it went great. Same terms 25% up front the rest 60 days out. Only problem is I can't get ds to stay at the POP again...guess he's had a taste of the good life now!!!

we rent our points out but at 12.00 US per point and it is 50% upfront and the remainder due 4 months before your travel date. We have a contract drawn up that we send to the renter and so on with the details outlining the cancelation policy and how it will work etc. We have never had any problems renting out our points and have sent families on great holidays for very little money for the accomodation they recieve.

Just joining this thread for info :sunny:

I would like to rent points at some point in the near future :flower:

(I'm always in the "planning" mode :rotfl: )

Disney is my "Happy Place" because I know when I go to Disney that I can leave the world's problems outside the main gate ::yes::

Tag fairy..........You keep flying by me

I'd like to rent points for April 2006. S

We would need about 15 points each night for Vero Beach--30 points total (according to the points calculator --just looking for a standard room nothing fancy...though if only $ was no object....). Do you pay tax on the points or if it is say $10 per point US then does that translate into $150 per night (with or w/o tax). I am just trying to find the most economical option since my research of beach properties after the cruise seem to be more than $150 per night and they are not Disney quality.

Just an aside has anyone ever been to Vero Beach?
Thanks everyone for all the help.

We have points for 8 days in March . It is the second time for us. We rented from on Ontarian and had no problems. Go for it.

The price per point is the total cost ... no taxes!

I've rented once from a Canadian Dis'er, and once from my DSis. They are great accommodations for the price. Yes, there is some trust involved, but I think that renters would be willing to provide you with contacts who have previously rented from them ... especially if they're Dis'ers.

Never been to VB, but it sounds like a great way to end your cruise vacation.

Good Luck!

Beware!!!

We rented points for a wonderful Trip last year and ended up buying 160 pts ourselves!!!

We absolutely love the Vacation Club and when we rented from a really nice family in Oregon, we just sent a US Money order and he made the reservation in our names. He sent us the confirmation and everything went off without a hitch.

We have some points for sale this year and probably next because we just found out we are having twins in July!!

If you are intersted, just send me a private message.

Good Luck! pirate:
