any americans....

Our family watches the World Cup with tremendous interest. We love the beautiful game, but we are also interested in American sports. Our list would be; Pro Football, College Basketball, College Football and Soccer Worldwide. I could care less about the NHL, NBA, and have only a rooting interest in MLB.

It is really popular up here in the Toronto area. It seems like every other car has a flag flying out the window. Every now and then you hear all these horns blaring when some team wins.

I find soccer boring but there is definitely an excitement in the air!!!

Columbus, Ohio is an hour and half away, and their pro team is hosting viewing parties with big screen tvs, tents, food and drinks. During the last cup in 2002, they drew 22,000 fans. So yes, I'm a fan of the World Cup and played soccer in high school. My daughter is starting her first year on a select team.

With that being said, it saddens me that ESPN Classic will show Poker reruns rather than the World Cup. I'm still at work during the 5:00 replay. I wish they would rerun the games late at night around 10 or so. Dominos was on ESPN2 last night, I couldn't believe it. Anyway, poker is huge, I'm just tired of it.

So I haven't seen a game since Sunday. Sweden vs Trinidad n Tobago was my favorite match (even with the tie). Argentina looks tough. Becks is playing well with his assists.

Finally, I can't get into the announcers. Maybe I need one with a British accent. American players need to get better experience by playing in the Europeon leagues. MLS isn't developing world class talent. We'll see what happens with Freddy Adu. Hope he can break out.

Maybe that's true in your locality, but as a nation there is more interest in the World Cup than the Stanley Cup. It's not on the same level as the Super Bowl or World Series, and probably never will be. But as long as a match is in HD, I will watch it.

Not around here!!! For the most part, mostly just those of Portuguese heritage are watching the world cup. Those that are interested in sports watches the Stanley Cup (even though the Bruins didn't make it).

I haven't seen too much soccer memoriablia around - but we sure do see lots of hockey stuff!!

I heard that the soccer team here (who are they anyway? Something like the Recs?? ) wants to build a SMALL stadium because Gillette Staduium is WAY to big & they never come anywhere near capacity. :rotfl:
Even the Bruins can sell out games!

For those saying soccer is for both boys & girls, so are other sports. Ice Hockey is really big & rising here in southern New England. Girls also play baseball/softball. In this area, nearly every child is involved with some sport - soccer, hockey, baseball, softball, football or dance or karate, etc. It seems that a LOT of the kids (NOT ALL!) who play soccer are the ones who can't skate or hit a ball with a bat so they kick a ball with their foot instead.

Just finished watching the 2nd half of the England game at lunch today!

What did you think Carol?

Wow! that is just so typical of England, they play what should be an easy game and keep the fans on the edge of their seats - they kept us til the last few minutes then a goal from the man-crossed-with-a-stepladder Crouch and a blinder of a goal from Steve Gerrard  and we're through!!!
Thought Trinidad and tobago played really well, It was a shame their one goal was off side but at least WE'RE THROUGH!!! YAY! :cheer2:
now, just Sweden to beat then if Paraguay beat T&T England and Paraguay go to the next level.
Prediction for England vs Sweden?1-0 England (Rooney at 85 minutes!)

Forgot to add.. the England fans were amazing, every time the game looked flat - which was a lot in the first half they lifted the whole stadium with the chants of 'its coming home, its coming, footballs coming home'

DS and I watch as much as we can. Last go round we hosted a World Cup Breakfast at a campground. Loved the Germany vs Poland game, what a finish. :thumbsup2

Yes, a great game spoiled completely by the violence of the fans after! 429 arrests is disgraceful. I'm so glad the England fans haven't let themselves down too badly yet.

Well done USA for drawing with Italy - your team played really well too.

Well Togo is out of it now. I guess voodoo charms don't make a difference.

Disgraceful, but very expected. There is a lot of bad blood between Germany and Poland and it was inevitable. Plus the combination of too much beer and too much sun isn't a great combination :)

Carol - Big game today, England and Sweden. It's showing over here at 3pm EST. When I get home from work I plan to watch it. Good luck.

Go ENGLAND!!!! :cheer2:

I've tried to catch parts of games, whenever possible, but it's been difficult, since they're all on during the middle of the day (that, and I was on vacation last week and not near a TV much).

I am! I played soccer for about 6 years, also.

In fact, DD2.5 usually watch it every day on ESPN or ESPN2. The only thing I wish ESPN would do is have Julie Foudy and Alexi Lalas on all the time instead of Eric Wynalda - he gets on my nerves.

Personally, I would rather watch soccer than baseball, basketball, or hockey any day.

THe MLS team that plays in New England is the Revolution.

It would make sense that the Bruins sell out their games due to the fact that they have been around longer than MLS.

Our household is watching the World Cup. Americans have been missing out on the fun for too many years!

Montréal is a big soccer city. Our local team l, the Impact draws big crowds at every game and they are building a big stadium for them.

My neibourhood is very multyethnic ( so is the city) Every foodcourt in the city has put-up TV screens so that people can follow the games. Flags are floating on every two cars and the city feels like there is one perpetual wedding going on with all the onking. If you happen to be in little italy when Italy is playing , everybar retaurants and café are buzzing.

A few yeras back , when France and Brazil were playing the final game , Brazill won , and thousands of people close St-Laurent street , celebrating. The french supporter all left their bars to go meet the Brazillian supporters at thire to congratulate. Montréal was the best place in the world for a few hours !

Soccer is the only trully international sport. Any one can play because you only have to know how to run and kik a ball. Most superstars started in the streets , in the slums of third world country . They offer a lot of hope to these people. When you win at the world cup , you trully are a world winner , where as when you win the world series in baseball, since only americans play, you are not the best in the world ! Why is it called the world series when only one country competes ?

DS12 is completely enthralled by the World Cup this year. He can't make up his mind though who he wants to win.

He has totally gotten into soccer this year, I am glad. I played soccer as a little kid, have no idea why it is not popular here in the states. And I would much rather he be into soccer than football or baseball. World series makes no sense to me, it is only the US playing! Must be ego of the country?

We are watching here too- its something different and we can actually watch something with our kids at the same time! (we DVR Csi, Law and Order and other stuff) The only thing I find unappealing (sp) about it is when the palyers roll around in agony :rotfl2: calling for stretchers, when they fall or are tripped or whatever - I guess I just don't get it- I mean get up play and quit whining espically when it seems both players are going for the ball,-- but we have really enjoyed watching it just the same!

Thanks loads for all your feedback and comments, such a shame the US are now out of the running, it would have been nice to see them hang on til the next round. We're finally through to the quater finals after another nailbiting game so Roll on the 30th June and we'll (maybe) make it to the semis once more.
