any americans....

DS (15) and his friends are all watching. He went to a friends house today for the game. Of course he was not happy with the results!

DS watched the game yesterday with great interest as it was played in the city in Germany in which he was born. :) DH and I remember what a big event it was from our days in Germany in the early 90's. Cars going by a hotel we were staying at, men blowing their car horns and yelling something!

My DH is a big soccer fan and he goes nuts during the World Cup. We were at Disney during the last World Cup when USA was doing pretty good. No matter what time they played, DH was up at watching. He also did it for other teams he liked. I don't remember where the World Cup was played last time, but I know the games usually came on at 3:30 or 4:00 am.

Funny, DH is home sick today and it happens to be USA's first World Cup game. :scratchin But, he really is sick. It takes a lot to keep him home. Even then he's in the recliner with his laptop. It's just a bonus that the US is playing today.
Aahh, so were you the ones in the room next to ours 4 years ago that were watching the games and yelling whenever there was a goal? Definitely BIG soccer fans in the room next to ours! This year we're home, but DH watches all the games too, mostly on Univision, even if it's on English speaking TV.

Oh yes! My fiancee was here over the weekend from England and there was no way I would let him miss their first game. We also watched a few of the others...but I missed the US game today because I was at the airport with him.

.... watch the world cup? just wondering, I know its not as big a news as your world series and superbowl but just wondered if you're bothering to watch?

I am latina, so we loveeee soccer and the world cup is our big event.

I was so sad watching the game today, the C.Republic won 3-0, our US team played great, but they are in the worst group, and C.republic is the second best in the world. Now the have to play Italy and that won't be easy :( either. The US team didn't have much fans or supporters. :(

My other Team Mexico won 3-1 over Iran, now my other tem Brazil plays tomorrow!!

I totally agree that Frank Lampard is a cutie, I think the english win the vest looking team prize even if they don't win Jules rimet!
yup, Beckham, Lampard, Wolcott (I know, I'm a cradle snatcher!), Cole and Owen are Yum!
so I take it then that its quite a big game for GIRLS to play? many of you mentioned your DDs playing..

I know there are parts of the states that seem to really be pushing soccer, A friend of mine, Alan Yendell is a FIFA coach and he used to coach my DSs side on a saturday morning, then FIFA sent him over to (I think it was) Dallas to a secondary school there to coach them. When he arrived he said the guy showing him around was pretty humble and kept asking if the facilities were 'up to Alans standard'. Alan was gobsmacked as he said this secondary school had built a literal copy of Old Trafford!!!! - poor Alan had been coaching teams used to playing on wasteland and getting changed in cars :rotfl2:

I think the game is big for both youth boys and girls. My dd plays soccer, but in a couple of yrs she will most likely be forced to choose between soccer and gymnastics. Because he dad coaches her soccer team she has been able to do both, but the time is coming as gymnastics is extremely demanding and that is her first choice. My ds will be a soccer player. I told dh that I will have to go live with him over in England when he is playing in the Premier League.

I would love to come over to Old Trafford to see a game. I am a big Man Utd fan (dh is an Arsenal fan). My dh and I did come over to England to see games for our honeymoon (many of years ago). We were in London and saw Arsenal play, QPR and we went up to Scotland and saw the Rangers (let me state - Celtic fan here) play.

I agree England is loaded with good looking guys (Beckham does absolutely nothing for me) but Lampard & Owen are very easy on the eyes!

As for World Cup - US is done. No way are they making it out of the group with Italy and Czech Rep. All we can hope for now is a good showing in their 2 remaining games.

France plays today. Hoping for big scoring from Henry since he is on my fantasy team. He is simply amazing with the ball. Also waiting until Thursday when England plays Trinidad. There really is no reason that England shouldn't advance. They are in a fairly easy group.

I just love all of these games! popcorn::

Wow! 80 tried out for 18 spots. I stand corrected. Is league play as popular where you're at?

We are in NJ and I believe that soccer is very popular here. There are quite a few good leagues around and most start at u-8 on a competitive level and at a rec level my ds was able to play this yr on a u-5 team. There are several outdoor and indoor leagues for our kids to play in.

Yup, my British husband and I are watching. Saw the first game from Best of British restaurant on I-Drive, the second game from Raglan Road at Downtown Disney, the third from Planet Hollywood, missed the forth, watched the fifth from Best of British again, and the sixth from the Florida Mall.

Great fun, but I wish the Americans hadn't been quite so sleepy during their game......

Well if your Ds gets to play at old trafford count me in for a ticket! good luck to him.
I also have a soft spot for the french team as The Love Of My Life Eric Cantona was their star player for a while, but Thierry almost makes up for him! he's got va-va-voom!!!!

We're watching! DS8 went to camp yesterday and asked if I could record all the games he's missing this week.
I'm watching to see if the Togolese Voodoo priest has worked his magic!

Thought Croatia played well against Brazil, shame about the one goal, it does kinda put england and Brazil on a level footing though so that can't be all bad

My son is watching avidly. The only time we DON"T have soccer on is when the NBA games are on OR we are asleep/gone. lol!

Well, we kick off against Trinidad and Tobago in around 3 hours - wish us luck!
The pundits are already saying it'll be a walkover for England which I reckon has now jinxed us giving Englands reputation of winning the hard games and losing the easy!
On the other hand Wayne 'Shrek' Rooney has been declared match fit so unless the pressure gets to him we should see some brilliant play

Just finished watching the 2nd half of the England game at lunch today!

What did you think Carol?
