Any advicefor a camping newbie?

We are going a rent a cabin in Monticello IN in May. I have never went camping, but always wanted to. Would y'all help with what I should bring, etc? My DH wants to barbecue at night (there are charcoal pits right outside). There is electricity but no kitchen. The water spigot is outside.
What am I in for??

You are in for a treat!!!! Plus, a real bonding experience with your family! You'll be in a cabin, which is a good choice for a first time camper. You'll get the feel for it without needing to pitch a tent or pull a camper. You will get dirty, you will have to improvise and work together. Remember to relax, enjoy your family and take in the big outdoors! Nature is taken for granted these days, so get out there, and see this beautiful Earth that we have!

You need to bring everything AND the kitchen sink(no kitchen) J/K, you will have a wonderful time. Bring bikes and things for the kids, lots of marshmellows, games, and chairs to sit around the fire. The rest is just accessories! Have a FABULOUS time!!

Just thought of this, bring a picnic table cover. It seems like a simple thing, but when we first started camping it is the thing I ALWAYS forgot, and most of the time REALLY wanted. PolyPix(can't type PP, lol) is right, check out the sticky, lots and lots of good info there.

you got that right!! I love my piper!! I got my own 300 ct egy cotton sheets too.. right along with my feather bed!!

actually this is a beginning of a devious plan...LOL
My DS had a pop-up camper, then a motor home (used but nice). I had a great time whenever we had to evacuate with her to a campground ( I grew up in Louisiana). I would ultimately like to get a pop-up down the road. Right now we cannot...live in urban Chicago, condo, and I would have to rent a storage space to park the thing.

But I am thinking ahead and hope to get the DH bitten by the camping bug ( as well as me).

He has been camping before like twenty years ago!

As to your original question what to bring, it's probably on the list you were directed to, but if I could only bring one thing besides clothes it would be my electric skillet.

If you have one take it. If you don't, you probably won't miss it. We use it to make breakfast most mornings. Eggs, sausage, bacon, hashbrowns, pancakes... Usually not all at one breakfast but my point is, you can do a lot on an electric skillet.

and we will stick to our (at least) 300 count sheets! I personally liked the 800, but I got to save more pennies.

Fellow Chicagoians here, hit with the camping bug, same issues as you, no place to store a camper, soooooooooo We are becoming TENT CAMPERS!!!!

With that said... we will be tent campers with Air condtioning, air mattresses, 300 plus count sheets, and all the bells and whistles...

But I would love to know how your stay in Indiana goes

(Our first tent trip is also in May, over Mother's day weekend at Mirror Lake)
