Any advice on mattress shopping?

We need to buy a twin-sized mattress set for our youngest child. I would like to get something nice with a pillow top if possible. Any advice on shopping for the best deal? I am usually great with getting deals, but mattress shopping has always confused me...it seems like every store sells different stuff and it's tough to comparison shop. We have the standard furniture stores here (Basset, Ashley, Ethan Allen, Rooms to Go Kids, etc.) as well as BJ's Wholesale, Sam's Club, all the usual mall stores, etc. We also have plenty of stores that only sell mattresses. I am not sure where to start...

No suggestion on where to buy, but I was never sorry I bought my boys XL twins since it didn't take long for their feet to start hanging over the end. My middle son was almost 6'1 by freshman year. We didn't have room for bigger beds since they shared a room but the extra length certainly helped.

Big Lots!!!! They sell lasts seasons beds at a discount from Ashley for sure and other bed/ furniture stores, Plus they deliver!!

Or Ikea has day beds.

DO NOT BUY A PILLOW TOP MATTRESS!!!

You reduce your mattress life by 1/2 when you buy a pillow top mattress - you can't flip your mattress, you can only rotate it.

We bought a very expensive New Englander mattress when we got married almost 5 years ago - and it's almost ready for the trash heap, since it can't be flipped, there is a huge sag in the middle.

Don't buy a cheap mattress - it may feel great, but they use really cheap spring metal, and it loses it's recoil over time.

Once again - NO PILLOW TOPS!

We have always said that when we buy another mattress it will be from Sams Club. We bought our daughter's there a few yrs ago (twin) and it has been wonderful! The price was definitely right too!

I agree with the no pillow top advise. My chiropractor insists that a majority of people with bad backs have pillow top mattresses.

My DD just transitioned from crib to twin and I got her mattress at Costco. It's a Sealy and is very comfortable (somehow I end up sleeping on it at least a few hours every month). We needed a mattress only on got it for around $120.

My two cents; Is your child still potty training or having night accidents? Get a cheap mattress. I have scrubbed more pee and vomit off of my kid's beds than I can count. Tried the plastic cover and it would make them sweat. I got DD a good one when she could hit the bucket if she barfed.

I've heard Costco is good. I've also heard if you can get a discontinued floor model, you're looking at a lot of savings, but they often remove the warranty. I was fine with that, we got two really nice Simmons Beautyrest queen mattress sets for $500 a piece.

I'm pretty sure that we have Big Lots here. I will look into this.

We don't have a Costco, unfortunately.

DH and I have a pillow top mattress and we love it. I think we've had it for about 8 or 10 years, and it's still holding up great. I never considered that many pillow tops don't hold up, though.

If you're a Costco member, you don't need a local store, you can order online. I got our guest room mattress online from Costco, and am very happy with it.

I always put a full, zippered plastic mattress cover on all new mattresses. Protects against dust mites, dirt, etc. Do you know how much your mattress increases in weight over a few years from accumulating this debris? Do a Google search; you'll be shocked.

I don't understand the mattress cover causing sweating. Don't you use a mattress pad?

I went to Big Lots this morning and I found a decent set that I liked for $199 total (mattress and box spring). I can live with that. I am going to look at a couple of other places (the Bassett store that is going out of business, possibly also Rooms to Go Kids), but I think we'll probably end up with the set from Big Lots. Thanks to the poster who made that suggestion. I never would have thought to look there.

Just updating to say that we ended up buying a Serta mattress from Big Lots for $159. It's really nice! We may go back and buy a second one to upgrade our older DD's bed. Thank you to the poster who suggested Big Lots. We looked around a lot and they definitely had the nicest mattress for a good price:thumbsup2

Check out Overstock sounds odd but they have some decent sets on there. Otherwise I'd just recommend coming home and doing some online research with the quotes you were given in store.

Big lots should have a sale coming up where if you buy the mattress you get the foundation for $10. We asked last week since one of the grandkids needs a new set and they said they thought this would take place around Labor day.

Figures! Well, I'll wait for that sale to get my older DD's new set then. For younger DD, DH actually figured out that we can't use a regular or low-profile box spring. The bed set that we have is more like a platform. He is coming up with some other solution.

I have to say, DH and I are really impressed with this bed. It's really nice...we can't believe that it came from Big Lots. Neither of us would have ever thought to look there, so I'm so glad that someone suggested it!

We currently have a Kingsdown, it was fantastic. We are also looking for a new mattress. Ours is the age of 12. We have not purchased the Kingsdown thinner, but it held up well. I've heard good things about the Stearns & Foster as well.

I am glad that I remembered  Big Lots sold good beds!! And that it worked out so well for you!!

We purchased our last mattress from Sams Club and are extremely happy with it. We bought it about 5 years ago. We bought the most expensive model as we are picky and wanted to make sure we got the most comfortable one. It is a pillowtop and has a layer of memory foam in it.

I have to admit the memory foam took some getting used to. But after about a week I have been sleeping like a dream :cloud9: And I have back and neck problems (herniated disc in my neck etc) so I can say it is good for orthopaedic issues too.

Good luck and happy shopping! PS The nice thing about Sams too is that you can test it in the store as well- they pull out so you can try it out first. We were nervous buying from a store that doesn't specialize in Mattresses but I believe it was a Sealy we purchased- a well-known brand used in many hotel chains- so don't let that stop you from buying here. I'm glad we didn't :thumbsup2
