My DD was 1 1/2 the first time we went to Disney and got the stomach virus the last day of our trip. We went back again in Feb and DH got it. I tried to baby wipe our hands and sanitize them as much as possible. We are going back again and I am just wondering if there is anything more I could do to prevent this from happening, again.
Thanks,
Stacey

I would say to use anti-bacterial gel, but have heard that using too much of that can make you sick too. Also, may be a problem for kids who put their hands/fingers in their mouths. Your probably doing as much as you really can with the baby wipes.

Be sure to use good old soap and water as much as possible. Try to be sure that any object baby can put in mouth is as clean as possible, try to avoid hands all over the railings in line and use the hand sanitizer yourself even if you choose not to use in on baby.

I swear by Airborne. I always make sure to take it before I fly or travel. They even make a child's version.

I know Airborne helps with colds and flu, but does it help with gastrointestinal illnesses too?

This is my worst nightmare...that one or both of the kids will get sick just before, or during our trip. They both had high fevers and vomiting the last time they went...my step son was just an infant and my step daughter was just three....so I'm hoping it was a "baby" thing! *fingers crossed* (they are 8 and 5 now!)

In the meantime I'm on both of them about hands in the mouth or nail biting and thorough hand washing. They both know about being "healthy for disney" and just yesterday I heard my step daughter say to her brother "STOP putting your finger in your mouth, do you want to get SICK for Disney?!"

I saw the children's airborne at WalMart yesterday...some people swear by it...my cousin's who are in med school say it's a scam.:confused3 I think it takes HORRID, but I'm willing to try anything to keep everyone healthy!!:thumbsup2

Airborne pumps up your immune system so it may help with tummy toubles. Plus it has ginger in it which settles stomaches. I would suggest an Airborne and hand sanitizer campaign to cover all the bases.:thumbsup2

The generic walmart stuff tastes putrid. DH doesn't seem to mind the taste of the generic so I buy it for him and splurge on the real stuff for me. Orange is the best flavor in my opinion and I only take it with about a shot glass worth of water.

Yeah, we have 2 doctors in the family too and they say it really is not helpful, but I don't see any harm in it either (unless you take to much).

Its not that its a scam, but it kinda is. All thats really in it are vitamins and such that you can take by themselves and probably gives you the same effect. I have been very diligent in taking extra vitamin c and echinacea when people around me are sick and so far this year i have been good, but i also wash my hands non stop, eat a balanced diet and take other vitamins (not regularly but sometimes), i get sick about 1-2 a year but this year -0-. I had started taking the airborne but i stopped buying it in leu of just poopping vit. c and echinacea. It is no harm and when your body has had enough C, you just poop it out (well not solid ihave heard).

So yes it is effective I think but you cant solely rely on that if you are prone to getting sick. As to gastro issues, i dont know if it will help with those.

We took DS who had just turned 2 for his first trip in January. I was so nervous that he would get sick especially because it was during cold & flu season. Before we left I was sure to get him to bed on time most nights, get naps in, drink plenty of juice and not over-expose him to other kids. On the plane I just clorox wiped the seat, armrests, window area, and tray. Then when we got checked into our room at POP I brought Clorox Anywhere (best stuff!!!) and sprayed everything down. I know the room was cleaned but I sprayed things that were low to the ground, remote control, doorknobs, phone, etc... I wasn't going to take any chances. We also didn't keep too many late nights, that's why we went during Value Season, and made sure he was well fed and well rested!

Drinking DanActive yogurt drink is also supposed to help boost your immune system, and knock on wood we've been drinking it for quite a few months and we have yet to have a cold or stomach virus this year. Also if you use anti-bacterial gel make sure it is completely rubbed into the skin and you should be ok.

Blessed Be,
Tina

Be careful with the sugar content in those things...it can be an equivalent to scarfing down cookies for breakfast! And for my husband who has all sorts of tummy stuff, the sugar actually kick starts tummy trouble. My neighbors SWEAR by the stuff though. They are older and said it has greatly improved their health and immunity. I just wish it weren't so sugary! It's like it counteracts all the health benefits!

A few years ago, we had a problem with getting ill while on vacation. The doctor we visited told us the problem was the change in geography. Our bodies were immune to the virus' in our local area. However, as we were travelling 1,000 miles from our home, the virus' in our vacation area (Florida)were slightly different, and we were not immune to them. Thus, it isn't uncommon to be sick when travelling. The Dr. advised it was a common problem -- nothing we could do to prevent it.

CS,

I have stomach problems as well but they have never been agravated by the DanActive . But then again all people are different. I never looked at the sugar content , it's something I will definitely take a look at tomorrow morning, thanks for the info. :thumbsup2

This is my biggest fear while traveling. I think it is, because when we went last March, there were people throwing up everywhere, and coughing like crazy. It was the flu/stomach bug season. It was nasty! If my kids were to get sick, I would never drag them into the parks while throwing up. I know it sucks they are sick, but i would rather get them better, and not expose them to others. I wish others thought that way too.

One thing I do before leaving is try not to expose my children to lots of kids/parks/play groups the week before we leave. Also, wash their hands like crazy. I am also going to take Lysol this time, and spray the room down.

Here's to a healthy trip to all!

Firstly, just wanted to say we love Airborne. It really does seem to help us anyway.

I have a question, this Chlorox Anywhere stuff sounds amazing! When we travel I usually stop and get cleaning supplies for the room (can't help it, just have to *lol*) but that would be a major pain this time and I'd like to get some of this "Anywhere" stuff and take it with us.

Has anyone flown with it? Does it say if its flammable on the packaging? I see they make like a 4 oz size, has anyone traveled with that in their carry on or checked it in a bag while flying?

I think with that and Chlorox wipes I could avoid a trip to the store. I hate to have to touch stuff like the bathroom fixtures before I spray them with something first (then wipe them down) usually I use lysol but that's aerosol so I'm sure you can't pack it for flying.

What supplies have you/can you pack for trips requiring air travel??? Is 4 oz small enough with the new TSA standards? I thought I heard 3 somewhere on our last trip. . .

Thanks bunches and may everybody have healthy trips!

I don't know how to avoid getting sick in that environment. We're clean (wash after bathroom visits - before eating - etc) but not obsessive hand washing all the time. I keep a hand sanitizer nearby to use occasionally when out and about - especially for DS since hands still gravitate toward his mouth - but again, not obsessive about it. (so we don't fit into the kill so many germs we end up being at risk group)

We got SO freakin' sick last May. Second day there DS (18 months) started vomiting. a solid 2 days gone there. Then I got sick. No V, but lots of D. Didn't dare leave the house. couple of healthy days - then SIL (who never actually admitted she was sick) didn't "feel up to riding things" one day - mind you this was the morning we were in Fantasyland... Then, the last 2 days of the trip DH was sick with D also. That was my 12th trip to WDW and the first time I've ever been that sick there. (only other time I was sick at WDW, I'd had a cold before the trip and I always get bronchitis after a cold - so that started before I left - not a result of the trip.)

We don't know where we got it - We assume from the airplane. But heaven knows we'll sure be taking extra Vit C and Echinacea at least a solid month before and during our next trip. What a miserable experience! If it helps in the least, it will be worth it!

Soap and warm water before eating anything helps.

I also carry a thing of the Wet Ones Antibacterial. I like it better than the gels since there is a cloth for my DD to wipe the dirt off onto. Also, I had a gel bottle leak in my purse once before and that made a mess.
