I am thinking of getting my boys (10 & 8) headphones for Christmas. They have Ipods and Nintendo DSs, so it would be to go on them. The Ipod earphones never seem to fit right or are uncomfortable. Any advice on brands/types (not superexpensive, obviously, they're kids!)
THANKS

This may seem shocking to some but I've picked up several pair of decent, no, GREAT headphones at the Dollar Store of all places. They come in several different colors so the kids wouldn't get them mixed up.

Happy shopping!

Your kids ears are still developing and can be damaged by harsh noise.

How much do you value your childs hearing?

You need to ask some questions

1 Do you want ear bud style?

2 Do you want ear canal style ( thesae use a silcone rubber tip which presses gently to the first bend of the ear canal

3 Do you want on ear Style

4 Do you want over ear style

5 Lastly, do you want open back ( leaks noise in and out..which means that if the kids use them in a noisy enviroment , bus, trian, plane, sitting room with the TV on, they will compensate by turning up the volume of the player. or do you want closed back that allows much less noise to be leaked in and out.

Closed back generally means that your kids will not have to turn up the volume to compensate for external noise. It also means that you can sit next to them in the car and not hear the whizz ding noises ;)

I would not recommend 1, they can be uncomfortable and kids tend to ramp up the volume too much.

I would go with 2, 3 and 4 in closed back version.

Final edit

All the ones linked above should work ok with the weak amplifier circuits in ipods and Nintendo DS. The harsh top end should be kept controlled and there should be some nice bass for music. I have listened to many of the examples listed and they sound very good for the money. I would be happy to listen to them on a plane flight. We have 18 pairs of headphones here between us, some costing as much as $300 :(

Do you want headphones or earbuds?

Most of the teens seem to like SkullCandy. They come in several different styles, sizes, and colors. You can usually find some great deals on them somewhere. I'm planning on picking up several for Christmas stockings one of these days.

Yup - this is what I was going to say. DD loves her SkullCandy's and, of course, they love how they look. I have to admit that I think they're cool, too.

Thanks for the responses. I have seen the skullcandy, at Target & maybe Best buy... I will check into them. I am not sure which type I want, I will see what's out there and use some of these suggestions as my basis.
And of course I value my children's hearing...

I got hot pink Skull Candy's for my hot pink iPod and I love them! I hate the iPod earbuds (they don't fit in my ears and kept falling out) so I got the Skull Candy's and I've been very happy with them! :thumbsup2

Skull candy here as well. But DS loves the bigger ones. The bigger the better for him.
He has these

I got them at Dick's Sporting Goods. I have seen the smaller ones(which might be better for littler guys my son is 14) at Target.

Here's another vote for Skullcandy. I've had a few different styles (I bought the subsequent ones for the "cuteness" factor, not because they quit working or anything...lol) and have been quite pleased with the sound, especially for the value. They also do quite a nice job of sealing out external noise without being actual noise-isolating earbuds.

DS & I both have SkullCandy. :thumbsup2
I was going to get them at BestBuy, but thought they were too expensive. A day later I went to Tuesday Morning and they had the EXACT same ones for 1/2 the price! I bought the 2 pair I could find, but would have gotten more if they'd had them!

Look around...you might find them at Marshall's, or TJ Maxx...or Tuesday Morning.

i got skullcandy headphones for myself at target (before they were trendy) they were a decent price $29. or so....but they do have quite a range in price.

2 of my dd's will be getting a pair for Christmas, they take turns borrowing mine.

I'm getting my dd11 skullcandy low riders for her iPOd.

Skullcandy.................I wasted my time trying to help :guilty:

Yep, they look cool, but don't confuse the sound quality with the real thing. They should however still sound better than the 50c stock buds that ship with ipods and the like.

If you must, again, get the closed back version or the canal version.

( as my old gran used to say....'Fur coat and no knickers')
