Any advice on buying new ceiling fan/light for kitchen?

I have looked at Home Depot, and at a bunch of online sites. I need something with white or off white (darn kitchen cabinets are white, walls beigy white, and floor Pergo whitish) and a light. I found a few I like online, but they turned out to be in the 500 range (not gonna happen)-the best was the Monte Carlo St Ives- http://www.montecarlofans.com/5SIAF.html -over 500 for that, once I add the off white blades and light kit. Where can I get a quality, nice looking fan at a decent price (under 200)? I want something that's not too ornate, but has some texture and maybe a bit of something pretty on the dome light part.
DH says the ones I am picking are too nice for our kitchen, which is about 14X14 (I think), but there is no wall between this and the dining room.
Any advice?

I don't know how many fans we've put up in various residences...but we always looked for a bargain. Well, couple of years ago, we bought a HUNTER ceiling fan...and boy, is that thing QUIET!!!! Its in our bedroom & it really wasn't that much more than the other ones we would have bought in the past. It also wasn't the most expensive fan there either.

Well, we had to replace a broken one in another room, because we thought we were going to sell. I cheaped out & bought a Hampton Bay since we thought we were moving. The box said it was quiet. UGH!!! It's so NOISEY & it hums. Figures, its the computer room where I spend most of my time too. I'm watching for a HUNTER fan to replace that one with.

So.....if its a room you will be in alot & you will want the fan on....get a QUIET fan!!!!! Trust me.

I'm pretty sure the HUNTER came from either Lowes or Home Depot. I would ask them to turn all the other fans off so you can hear JUST the one you want to buy!!!

Never again will I skimp on a ceiling fan or go by what the box says.

Another tip, before getting ready to sell, I convinced DH that a couple of our fans were a bit out of date. Blades had wicker insets & glass shades had that wavy edge thing going on. (Think 1980 / 1990). Well, we simply unscrewed the blades & flipped them over to the plain sides. And I bought 3 newer style frosted bell shaped glass shades at Home Depot for $7 each. So, $21 to update each ceiling fan!!! And I really like them now!!!

If you find a fan you like everything about EXCEPT for the glass, consider changing the glass. Home Depot carries lots of glass shade / globe replacements in newer styles & colors too. If you are going to change blades though, they need to be the same length or it throws off the fan.

I was at Lowes today in the Lighting Section!! They have some of the prettiest globes they are all different colors of White With textures!!! And they do carry the Hunter Fans!!

I like this one and it come with a choice of White blades OR Bleached Oak fan blades,

which may work better with your biege/white problem,

If you have a Lowes near you go take a look, I was so amazed at the difference between Home Depot and Lowes there was so many modern pretty ceiling Fans!!

I have purchased many light fixtures and lamps from www.bellacor.com , but never a ceiling fan so I can't speak specifically to that. However,everything has been excellent quality. They have a decent selection of white/beige ceiling fans (also light kits that you could put on a fan). The do a good job shipping. Out of about 10 purchases I have made, nothing has been broken or chipped. I just checked and there is a sale right now

I don't believe they carry Hunter fans. ITA with a pp, I have purchased a couple or three Hunter fans and they are very quiet. Nice fans. I put Hampton Bay fans in my kids' rooms. They are noisy, look cheap/run of the mill, JMHO.

I second (third??) Home Depot and Lowe's with the Hunter fans. We have a fan in every room in the house, most have light kits. All are Hunter all from Home Depot or Lowes except the Kitchen fan. I needed a nickel (brushed stainless steel color) colored fan for the kitchen and bought that at a specialty lighting store. I needed it before the color was popular. It was a while ago and the specialty lighting store had ONE!!! Good enough for me!

Its known that alot of Lowe's products are aimed towards the lady of the home (styling / looks)....while Home Depot doesn't really care so much what the lady thinks.

Even the Lowe's store looks a bit nicer / cleaner inside, while Home Depot reminds me of a warehouse.

Funny thing though, I still go to Home Depot more, simply because it's closer.

I agree w/this completely!! Ours were very outdated but the changing the blades & shades made a world of difference! Plus I used a trick from Trading Spaces & bought a $3 tube of silver wax for a brass fan. It really updated the look, cheap & easy to apply.

Are there any smaller, local lighting stores in your area? I was less than enthusiastic about the lighting choices at HD and Lowes, and on DH's insistence I went into a local lighting store. We found a gorgeous fixture for our kitchen, and it was on sale for $140, which was just under the upper limit I'd set for the purchase.

I recommend looking on eBay. The fan I wanted for our living room was over $500 in stores (also a Monte Carlo). I found the exact same fan on eBay and bought it for $250 including shipping. It is gorgeous! You may be able to find the exact fan you want for less than half price on eBay.

When we rebuilt after the fire we used Home Depot for most of our fixtures, including ceiling fans. We have Hunters in all our rooms, bedrooms, living room, kitchen, they are great. I can't stand noisy when I'm trying to sleep so a quiet fan is a must, I love my Hunter.
