We will be going to Fort Wilderness around April does anybody have advice on cheap activities you can do without going to one of the parks? Thanks!

Hike the nature trail there. Disney is a wild life sanctuary, if you shouldn't have any trouble finding critters on or off the trail.

There are so many fun things to do at FW that some campers never leave the resort. Activities/facilities include (not including tax):
Two lighted tennis courts - Complementary equipment available for resort guests at the Bike Barn.
Nightly wagon rides at Pioneer Hall at 7 and 9:30 pm - Cost $8 adults, $4 children. Depending on MK hours, there are sometimes special "Fireworks" wagon rides scheduled.
Private carriage rides - Departs from Crockett's Tavern at Pioneer Hall from 6 pm to 10 pm. 30 minute ride through Resort. Cost, including tax is $30. Call (407) 824-2832 to reserve. Tickets also available from carriage driver.
Petting farm featuring goats, pot belly pig, donkey, ducks, sheep and chickens. This used to be Minnie Moo's home until she passed away.
Pony rides from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at Petting Farm- Cost $3
Bicycle rental including tandem bikes at (Bike Barn.)
Fishing in canals (free) or chartered largemouth bass fishing excursions on Bay Lake, which include a professional bass guide, refreshments (soft drinks, coffee, hot chocolate & water), fishing gear and a selection of tackle. 7am trip - $197.18; 10am trip - $183.09; 1:30pm trip - $169.01. Trips are standard 2 hours with maximum of 5 guests per boat. An additional hour may be added for $80. Live bait (shiners) are available for $15/dozen.
Kid Fishing: Bluegill Fishing - $28.16 per child for 1 hr trip (kids 6 - 12). Includes 2 guides, fishing gear & beverages. Up to 5 kids per boat. Trips leave on Saturday and Sunday only at 10am.
Sand volley ball court near Meadow Trading Post
Basketball and tetherball courts throughout the resort
Two arcades - one each at the Settlement and Meadow Trading Posts
Two heated outdoor swimming pools
White sand beach
Rental watercraft including 21' Suntracker pontoons ($34.74/half hr; $70/hour), must be 18 to drive; water mice ($21.59/half hr, $27.23/45 min, $30.05/hr), must be 12 and 5 feet tall to drive. Parent or guardian signature required for all drivers 12-18 years old; canoes, pedal boats and kayaks. Ask about weekly watercraft rental packages.
Water skiing/wakeboarding/tubing - Cost $140/hr with 5 guest maximum
Parasailing - $85/flight single, $135/flight tandem
Tri-Circle D Ranch - home of the draft horses used pull the trolleys down Mainstreet
Swamp Trail - three quarters of a mile loop along the shore of Bay Lake. NOTE: The elevated portions of the trail are closed.
FW Exercise Trail - 2.3 mile paved and sand path

we've taken a group similar to cub scouts camping in Fort Wilderness twice. During our trip we did "field day" style activities. We broke the boys up into small groups and had each group come up with their own mascot and painted them on flags(made of simple canvas and fabric paint) that they hung outside their tent/cabin. We had a dry erase board and points were given for each activity. Careful attention was given to each activity to make sure there was a combination of mental/physical/teamwork tasks so that the strongest & fastest team wasn't the only one to win. Also, our group is geared toward bonding/teamwork. A perfect example was the "5" legged race (four kids tied together). It didn't take them long to realize speed was not the answer in this event. We even came up with riddles to be solved that lead them to places in the campground for a problem solving challenge. We also made sure our groups each had a variety of ages (not all the little kids in one group, etc.)

Even though we have taken the boys to theme parks and water parks, they all agreed they had the best time doing the field activities that didn't cost a thing!!!! :sunny:
