who've breastfed their adopted babies? If so, I'd love to hear about your experience. I'm embarassed to admit this, but it wasn't until very recently that I found out it was even possible for a woman who's not pregnant to produce milk. But I think it's neat, so tell me about it!!

We adopted our DD 12 years ago. She's a total joy and I can't imagine my life w/out her.

I can't tell you anything about the milk except I guess they give you hormones?

Just saw the title to your thread and wanted to pop in and give my support! :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2
I do know that the owner of Motherwear adopted and breastfed her children. She speaks of it sometimes on the website.

i believe it is possible to get a very small amount of milk out but not enough to sustain the baby. you can 'train' your breasts through pumping to release a bit of milk and i'm sure there are plenty of herbal supplements that may help.
if you want the closeness and bonding experience then you can go with the tube and bag system a PP mentioned. Or just bottlefeed while holding your unclothed baby to your bare chest.
best of luck to you! i'm not an adoptive mom but i spent several months researching breastfeeding with both of my kids.

Some supplimentation might be necessary, but perhaps not to the extent that you are talking about. A big part of this probably has to do with the age of the baby. If the baby is older, it might be tough to get him/her to latch on, and this could affect the amount of milk that the mother's body can produce. If the baby is a newborn and latches on well, I think it's likely that the mother would be able to produce at least some milk. OP, have you tried reading the different breastfeeding boards on babycenter? I think there may be a board about this exact topic.

I'm militantly pro-breastfeeding, and I love the idea of an adoptive mom breastfeeding her little one. Good luck! I think you can do it!! Breastfeeding my baby is one of the best decisions I've ever made for so many reasons.

I'm not an adoptive mom, but I have been a member of breastfeeding forums for many years. Two of my faves are www.breastfeeding.com and www.nursingmom.net. I know there are many people from those firums that have bf'ed as adoptive moms. You might also want to check out www.kellymom.com for info on adoptive bf'ing.

Me too. Breastfeeding was very worthwhile for several reasons: convenience, financial savings, and health benefits. Few things in life are so perfect.

I can't offer any practical help, but I can assure you that it'll be worth the effort. Good luck!
