I have so many ants in my back yard all over the pavement I can't sit outside without them climbing all over me and biting! I've bought all kinds of spray the last being ortho NOTHING HELPS also when summer really gets here btw I'm in mass they will be all over the inside of my house

We had some luck pouring boiling water on top of where they were coming from.

Corn meal! Sounds crazy, but it just got rid of all my ants !

An exterminator can place some kind of substance that the ants take back to their home and it kills the entire bunch. You will never get rid of them by just spraying something that kills on contact.

I tried the boiling water only helped for about a day or two. How do u use the cornmeal just sprinkle it all over??

Sent from my iPad using DISBoards

Terro. You can buy it at hardware stores or Home Depot. Put some drops where you see the ants. They will go for it like crazy. Don't spray or kill them even though you will be tempted to do so. They will eat the Terro and must take it back and feed it to the queen. Until the queen is gone, the nest will still be there.

That's what cornmeal does. You sprinkle it at known ant gathering places and they take it back to the nest wherever that may be. Have to be patient depending on how many ants you have, but this works way cheaper than an exterminator.

If you have carpenter ants then that might be a different ball game, but for regular ants cornmeal or even borax will do the job.

For inside ants (the small ones that they call "sugar ants"), spray them with a mixture of half ammonia and half water. It will kill the ants and most importantly, disturb the "scent trail" that the other ants follow. I used to get an infestation twice a year in the kitchen and this worked like magic. Since I do a lot of cleaning with ammonia anyway, this served two purposes: kill the ants/disturb their scent trail AND clean my counter. If you can figure out how they're coming in the house (mine for some reason came in through an electrical socket one time, you can spray the area around it and that'll stop them dead in their tracks. It's a cheap try and it's safe.

Hire an exterminator. Best money ever spent.

Since it sounds like you have an infestation, I would go with an exterminator.

For small invasions we use the Terro too.:thumbsup2

This is what we had to finally do. I tried every one of these other suggested methods and more. They'd only work for a while and then I'd wake up to a kitchen infestation. They were also a problem in the yard.

Now we are on a 6 week maintenance schedule with a pest control company and it is so worth it.

Terro is amazing stuff. It wiped any ants we had in the same day. I won't be using anything else.

Again, TERRO.

My brother had a huge infestation on the outside of his house. We brought him Terro and put it in along the outside walls of his house and the ants flooded out from everywhere to get it. Now his ant problem is gone. But, do not kill the ants. They must take it to the queen to kill the colony.

I have found that Terro won't work on the bigger, white footed ants, or carpenter ants. But, on the smaller ants it works like magic. Give it a try, you won't be sorry.

Years ago, I think I found out about Terro accidently from an exterminator. Basically, that is what he was using and it cost us a LOT more to have him come out and put the stuff down!

Terro, Terro, Terro, and more Terro. Works every time!

Terro.

I found out about here and use it and it has never failed me yet. I think it is probably the one BEST piece of advice I have received from the DIS community board.

Before I try this TERRO stuff, how many ants come out? Do you have a whole mess of them running around eating the stuff?

I have used vinegar in a spray bottle that I used all over. Worked well but you will probably have to reapply often.

ETA Terro sounds great. If I ever have to get rid of a nest I will think of this stuff.

Terri is great but I stopped using it now that we have a puppy. I tried cornmeal out of desperation and it was amazing. I haven't seen an ant in weeks.

Ditto/
In Canada we use Raid brand same application.

You will have swarms wherever you put the Terro. When I used it in my house I'd put large drops on small squares cut from a paper plate and there would be ants all around each drop. I usually had to put new drops down for a day or 2 because they'd take it back to their nest. After that I wouldn't see an ant until the following spring.
