Which one is better, norton or mcafee. My internet company no longer provides free antivirus software and looking at staples, mcafee is cheaper. But with viruses I would rather spend extra money so I don't get viruses and have to spend even more money to fix them. Any input would be appreciated.

I have never heard of this. There is no come on? It is really free and it really does the job?

yes there are free programs out there... you can google AVG's reviews. usually gets good reviews..

We have McAfee Enterprise from work, but now we use Symantec Endpoint Protection which isn't as bloat/memory hog as normal Norton. I can use them free.

For firewall, I also use Comodo, which is free and one of the top ranked firewalls too.

I agree, i got AVG thanks to the great DIS'ers here, and LOVE it! have had it for several months now, and put it on my second computer as well!! I use to use MacAfee.

Go for AVG!!!

Many Internet Service Providers like Comcast and BellSouth offer free antivirus protection that you can download from their sites -- you may want to check with your ISP too!

I've been using Microsoft One Care for three years. It's 49.00 per year, and you get virus protection, plus it does maintenance, updates, backups, etc. Oops, I just checked and Microsoft is switching to Security Essentials, and it's FREE!

AVG FREE:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I also use Windows defender (which is built into Vista and 7.0)

I have to second Avast; we switched to them from Kaspersky last year and replaced the Norton our laptop came with with Avast, too. So far no viruses/trojans/worms (4 users - one a teen and one a child), and it's much less of a resource hog!

I also recommend AVG. Norton and McAfee do strange things to computers and cause more problems than they fix.

I was suggesting AVG Free in the past (free.grisoft.com) but now I would suggest Microsofts Security Essentials (www.microsoft.com/security_essentials) it is lighter weight and does a good job.

thanks I used One Care and when it ran out they were not going to replace it so I thought good to know they have.....I will be switching to Security Essentials not because AVG is not doing a good job but because like you said it is light weight and I was very happy with the previous version, One Care, and I am running Windows7 and it is probably the most compatible product at this time.

I used AVG free for two years and felt it was wonderful. I now purchase their entire suite and have found it is incredible. Their free version is great, and the pay version is 5 times greater. ;)
