Antigen Testing for Canadians

I wish I had seen this thread a bit earlier. I ended up booking antigen tests through the Covid Clinic at the Anaheim Hotel because dates for the end of April could be booked now and it looks like an easy location to get to. On the other hand, cost is $129 USD per person and "how about that exchange rate?"

Are there any refunds on this purchase?

We are doing our testing there too in March but I went with the PCR testing that is free, and booked it 3 days before our flight - I figure it's enough time to get our test results unless something dire happens with the lab, in which case we could still do a paid option. Just in case you can get a refund.

100% refund if we cancel 24 hours before test. So, that part is good. It's our first trip back to the States since 2019 so still figuring out what the testing experience will be like. We're staying at DLH so getting over to the Anaheim Hotel through the Esplanade seems relatively easy, plus being able to book a specific time rather waiting on a testing window was nice.

Part of me is wondering if the testing requirement will get dropped by the end of April and part of me is expecting it to get dropped at the beginning of May a few days after we come back.

Let's all have the same thought, no more testing to come back home to Canada - that would make planning so less complicated :D

The crappy thing is, if you test positive with your antigen test, you'll need a positive PCR test to even get back into Canada - but you have to wait 10 days after your positive PCR.

We're driving and flying through Seattle and doing all our testing there. At least we won't have to rebook flights if one of us tests positive. And with most people not wearing masks at DLR anymore, the chances of testing positive are a lot higher than they've been in the past!

Of course we're still hoping they drop the test altogether!!!! Fingers crossed🤞

Trying to decide whether my worst case scenario is testing positive after going to Disneyland and having to figure out the 10 days of isolation on the fly (10 days of slow scrolling through photos from the trip) OR testing positive before getting on the flight to go to Disneyland (I already have a carefully constructed set of fake memories from the April 2020 trip I didn't get to go on to WDW... "Remember that time I didn't get to use that fast pass for Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Train? Good times.").

Oh I hear you!

I think there's definitely more pre-trip anxiety. That's the main reason we are driving across the border! We've already canceled our trip twice! A third time would be devastating! But there's still anxiety. We feel cursed at this point! Lol

Testing positive on the way home is merely an expensive inconvenience turned holiday extension! 😆 And since we'd only have to isolate for 5 days in the US (the 10 day rule is only to cross the border), that leaves another 5 days of fun! That's turning a negative into a positive!

I haven't been following the rules closely, but if you test positive, couldn't you just do another RAT in 5 days or so, and if negative, you're good to go?

No. Current testing rules for re-entry to Canada are a negative antigen test within 24hrs OR negative PCR within 72 hours OR positive PCR on days 11-180. 😞

Isolation rules in the US were 5 days after testing positive, but not sure if that's changed. So you'll have an extra 5 days st DLR if you want! Lol

Here's what the government website says right now:

https://travel.gc.ca/travel-covid/travel-restrictions/covid-vaccinated-travellers-entering-canada
Canadians: To avoid being fined $5,000 per traveller (plus surcharges), wait to enter Canada at least 10 calendar days after your positive molecular test result. If travelling by air, you’ll be denied boarding. Counting starts the day following the day of testing.

  • for example, if your positive COVID-19 molecular test was taken on January 1, then January 11 would be the first day you could use it
  • January 11 would be the earliest scheduled departure date of your flight to Canada, or the first day you could use it to enter Canada by land or water
  • if you had a positive antigen test result, you must either:
    • wait until you obtain a negative antigen test result,
    • obtain a positive molecular test result to use after 10 days have passed from the date the molecular test was taken, or
    • obtain a negative molecular test result which can be used within 72 hours of your scheduled flight or entry to Canada by land or water
  • if your positive proof is accepted you won’t have to take arrival or Day-8 tests

The positive PCR + 10 days is only if you want to travel on the basis of your positive result. If you get a positive PCR you can travel sooner than 10 days if you get a subsequent negative test.

Although it is possible to test negative several days after your positive test, the average is about a week to ten days - with some people continuing to test positive for weeks. It's definitely smart to plan for the worst case scenario, and hope you can skirt the 10 day wait with frequent tests in the hopes you eventually get a negative result. I'm personally holding out hope they drop the test altogether before we are due to come home! Lol!

Wouldn’t that be amazing?! I ordered the switch health antigen kits on Monday and I still haven’t gotten a shipping notice so now I’m starting to get nervous that they won’t come before we leave on Thursday night!

That's exactly why we're sticking with a PCR test 72 hours before departure for WDW March Break. We'll get to enjoy the final three days without worry if all goes well with the tests, and if not, we've only got an extra seven days from the end of the original vacation and we don't have to go and find a PCR test because we'll have one.

That's a bit odd in my experience with them. I would call or email to follow up. They usually come quick (less than a week) for us. So hopefully Monday, but definitely follow up to flag it for them just in case something did go wrong on their end.

Yeah we’ve ordered from them twice before and had the test kits within a few days each time! I thought it was strange too!

That's true, but doing daily regular or daily PCR tests during that time period would not necessarily be cheap or easy, depending on where you are. But maybe one after five days or so could be worth it for sure. You never know.

We're paranoid, so we have backups for our backups lol. But I just checked my latest. I ordered some backup antigen tests (we have their RT LAMPs for 72 hours) on March 2. I got the shipping notice on March 3 and I just checked the Purolator tracking and the order is at the local Purolator depot scheduled to arrive on Monday. So four business days and I did not pay for express shipping.

I'm hoping for that too. But from the rumblings I've heard, the first thing they'll do is once again say no need for testing for land border crossings of less than 72 hours. I have a feeling it'll be awhile for flights. Hopefully by the summer though.

Yeah, this is far more likely than eliminating the test altogether- although since I'm crossing by land, I do have better odds at not having to test on the way home.

You could still do free daily/bi- daily antigen tests at Walgreens after your PCR until you get a negative. That's the option I will have in my back pocket if one of us tests positive.
