Do antibiotics cause weight gain?

Depression Tricyclic antidepressants (such as Norpramin and Sinequan)
Diabetes Insulin
Sulfonylureas (such as Diabinese and Glucotrol)
Epilepsy Valproate (such as Depakene)
Manic-depressive illness Lithium (such as Eskalith and Lithobid)
Schizophrenia Neuroleptics (such as Zyprexa and Risperdal)

Cindy, I'm trying to find info on this, but am not finding much on any "official" sources.

There are a few references on some of the low carb message boards of people who started on antibiotics and gained a little weight and/or a couple inches. I would think this is mainly water retention and will disappear after you're finished with the meds.

Antibiotics should not cause weight gain. However everyone is different. Maybe you are retaining water due to illness, stress, not drinking as much H2O so you are not flushing your system out, etc. Hang in there.

Wow - I'm just amazed that Claritin and Allegra are on that list! Between that and my birth control pill, I'm gonna have to work twice as hard. Thanks for the info!
