my anti virus software has expired and needs to be renewed
was looking at AVG Free Edition
anyone any info on them

I have two laptops to cover and can't seem to find anyone that will do the two together , which means two payments @£35-£59 each

What softwear do you all use
and the big Question are you happy with it

Thanks for any info

I use McAfee. They offered me a 3 user licence for £50. This includes anti-virus, firewall, privacy and spamkiller (though I'm not too sure that I need a firewall as my wireless modem/router has a harware firewall which is meant to be better than any software one - so I run them in parallel for safety!). I am very pleased with it, my only gripe being it slows the PC boot up.

I use Sophos, which is the AV used by the government. Out of all the ones Ive tried its the least resource hugging, but its major drawback is that it has to be manualy updated.
As far as I am concerned there is no need to spend any money, AVG pretty much does a good enough job.
There is no need to buy one of these like Norton that includes all the security firewall stuff, as the firewall on Windows XP from service pack 2 onwards does everything needed, such as individual program control and blocking new programs attempting to connect to the internet until you allow them. And Microsoft AntiSpyware does everything the likes of Adaware does.

We use McAfee but, according to DH, it doesn't cost us anything. Suspect it's because he has a dodgy copy rather than it actually being free :rolleyes1

DH says AVG always seems to get good write-ups in his computer mags and 'does what it says on the tin' :thumbsup2

I've been using AVG free for a long time now. Most days there is an update patch to keep up with all the nasties so I've no complaints :)

I use Zone Alarm pro, backed up with Spybot Search and Destroy and Ad-aware SE pro and finally System mechanic 6 pro.

You can't have too much security :teeth:

I have also been using AVG Free for a long time, and I just have to update it on a regular basis, it seems fine, so no complaints from me too. :goodvibes

Well I have downloaded AVG and it seems to be working OK

most of done it OK :confused3

thanks everyone for your help :wave2:

I used to use AVG but it was so "good" someone got into our bank account and charged several thousand dollars to my CC!

For the past year I've used Norton Internet Security and not had a single virus, spam or pop-up get through.

I've got Norton AV - went to buy it in the high street and when DH went to pay saw it elsewhere in the same shop shrink wrapped with Norton Firewall and £10 cheaper. 'Sttttttoooopppppp don't pay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

No complaints :thumbsup2

Used AVG for many years with no problems at all.
I have the free version at home and the paid for 'pro' version at work.

Don't want to throw a spanner but have a look on the net about Norton. It is a virus itself ;)

We do still use Sophos but they no longer update this much. Have to agree that it is a good piece of software if you can remember to update. The new Government DOI networks use McAfee.
