O.K., I'm still considering joining the YMCA. My DH seems to think that the membership only covers the weights. Does anyone know if classes like Aerobics and Yoga are extra? I know if you want to take any classes like swimming or Mommy and Me, you have to have a membership and it costs extra. Any info would be appreciated.

YMCAs operate independently. What my Y does is not necessarily what happens at yours. At mine, the full membership covers aerobics classes, yoga, fitness center, water exercise, etc. Swim classes, specialty classes like healthy back, massages, sports teams, etc., cost extra.

yep, each one is different. the one we used to go to covered swim lessons and mommy and me in the basic membership, as well as most of the cardio classes. Best thing to do is to drop in on the Y you are considering and pick up the info, or call them and have them send you some/answere any questions.

I worked for a YMCA for years. Each one is set up differently, but for my old Y.. this is how it worked

There were two types of memberships/ full or program. Full gave you the use of everything, pools, classes, use of grounds, basketball, tennis, etc. Program membership was just a small fee to participate in classes...

Also if you just wanted to do the yoga, kickboxing or aerobics classes you could just pay for the classes and the very small program fee.

Of course it was be advantagous to do the full membership if you are planning to do all the extras.

Ours has two memberships also, but none include everything. Yoga is about $10 for 6-weeks for members.

If you're interested in primarily partaking of the extras, you can usually do them at a higher cost than members pay. Check out both options. It might be cheaper for you to only pay for the classes you want. OTOH, once you start, you may want to take advantage of other things, too. It can become addictive, you know.

I second the motion for you to stop in at your Y. Take a tour and ask questions.

At our YMCA DD's swimming and gymnastics lessons are extra. There are some classes (aerobics) that do not cost extra.

I called my YMCA and they sent me their program booklet with prices and times, etc. in it. Also my YMCA has a website. Maybe yours does too. :)

Thanks guys, I'll think I will stop in tonight. Ours has a website but there are no prices on it. It tells what they have there and thats about it. Thanks for the info.
