I kept onto the bandwagon and purchased an XBOX ONE without doing much research. My boys (7 & 10) asked for an XBOX for Christmas. They want it mainly to play Minecraft. 10 year old would also like to play Call of Duty, because his friends do, but I'm not too keen on that one. I didn't realize the were so few games released for the XBOX one, and almost none I would be comfortable with them playing. Should I take it back and get an XBOX 360? I really don't want to spend money on a system that will be obsolete in a couple years. I also don't want to buy a system that they can't play for several months until new games, especially minecraft, is released. Can anyone help me through my conundrum and give me opinions on which is the better way to go?

Honestly, for the deal that you can get the Xbox 360 for right now I would go with it. Your kids are pretty young and you can get games much cheaper for that system and a much bigger variety of them.

By the time they are really ready to play on an Xbox One, the cost of the system will have come down from the $500 price and you probably won't have spent more than the original investment if you bought it now.

Here's what I mean:

Buy Xbox 360 now for the $100 or $150 price. Get some appropriate games and enjoy.

Then, in a couple years when the Xbox One has all the kinks worked out and has a larger selection of games you can look into buying it. The price should also have come down considerably in that time - probably to about $300.

You still, even with a couple games, aren't spending more than your initial investment in an Xbox One if you bought one right now. And, with the age of the kids, you will have a brand new system with new warranty now, and again in a couple years.

That's what I would do. If your kids were older (like my 19 & 14 yr olds) I would say just get the One.

How much the the xbox 360 you are considering? W/ Kinect and 250gb is $250.

Did you pay the retail price of 500 for the One or did you pay 800 to get it in time for Christmas? Places are charging crazy amounts over retail.

If I could get one for $100, I'd go that route. I've only seen them in the $250 range. I guess that has kinect.

That's a tough one since your kids are still pretty young. The 360 will be obsolete in 2yrs for sure I'd say...so in that case I'd go with the XBOne. However, as you stated, there are only a few games out right now and none are really geared toward young children (except Zoo Tycoon and I think there is a Lego game maybe??). Your kids are in that in between age where you want to buy something they can grow into but the content isn't quite geared for their age. I would Google a release date of upcoming XBOne games and see if games you approve of will be coming out by March. If not, you may need to get a 360 instead.

I spent today researching and looking at xbox 360. The console by itself is $149 for the 4g. The bundle with kinect 4g is 249. After you buy the system you have to buy remote controllers, xbox live membership, a headset, and the games they really want to play.

My son only wants to play minecraft with his friends and chat.

Do I need to buy anything else? I've seen wifi things, rechargeable batteries, wireless and wired controllers, etc.

If your sons want an XBOX solely for the purpose of playing Minecraft (I agree about you're not being keen on "Call of Duty", since that is an "M" rated game), I would run, not walk, and SELL the XBOX One on eBay (the secondary retail market is commanding CRAZY-MONEY prices!), buy a new XBOX 360 for the kids and pocket the rest of the $$$ -- as the 360 nears the end of its' usefulness in a few years, then, you could buy a ONE (for a lot less, as prices are sure to drop in a couple of years).

As for why so few titles, the system is new, hard to get, and most parents aren't going to buy a $400-500 game system for their small kids (the XBOX ONE is actually more of an "hub" for your home entertainment system, than it is a video game console), so that's why "so few" titles in the first month...

Just to clarify ...

Gaming systems are never "obsolete". I still have a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2 and a PS3

Sure they don't make new games for most of them anymore but you can still find a lot of the old stuff on the internet.

as for your question -
If your kids want to chat - you will need a headset

you don't "need" rechargable batteries but they are nice to have

you don't need the kinect, in fact I think it was a flop

I would definitely suggest wireless controllers but you should only have to buy 1 as I think when buying a new system it comes with 1 controller.

The Xbox One is the next generation, and yes eventually they will stop making games for the regular Xbox but that could/should be at the very least 2-3 years down the road.

If money is of no concern, I would stick with the Xbox One .... but if it is, then return it, save yourself a couple hundred bucks and get the regular Xbox

ORRRRRR ... you could hold the Xbox One for a few days, put it on Craigslist or similar and see what kind of profit you can make from it!! I'm sure someone out there is having a hard time finding one and would pay a premium!

I don't believe I have the day 1 console ( I haven't even opened the shipping box) and I saw a couple consoles at target when I was shopping today, so they don't seem that short of supply in my area. I'm not a seasoned Ebay person so I'm afraid of falling victim to a scam and losing my money. I bought a bundle from costco which I believe had an extra controller, gold card, and headset for $600, and $20 Microsoft gift card.

I am not sure what I would do. Are any of your sons friends getting the xbox One? He is most likely to play the system that he can play online with his friends.

I think I would stay with the One just because sooner rather than later they are going to start cutting down on the games that they make for the 360. On the other hand you could get a great deal on the 360.

I would take it back and get the 360. They will continue to support through the end of 2016, I think I read. Then you will still be able to get games used at gamestop. Most of their friends will have a 360, not a ONE at this point. I would get the 4G one. My son doesn't play a of games with the kinect, so I would maybe add that later, and not get it right now. You will need to get another controller, as you have two kids and it only comes with one. I bought DH a ONE for Christmas, but my DS 10 doesn't have any interest in it because there aren't games he wants for it right now. You can buy a whole lot of games for the 360 for the difference in price!

whoa, 10 year old and Call of Duty!!#! :confused3

You understand that is no way the age they should be playing something like that, right?

 I don't think that she asked for anyones opinion on that. Really none of YOUR business what she lets HER kids play.

Did you even bother to read my post? I said my 10 year old wants it but I wasn't planning to get it for him.

The next gen consoles are usually purchased first by some of the older crowd. It might take another year for kids to jump on the bandwagon. Some parents just don't want to spend $500-$600 on a gaming console (unless its really a husband that wants it).

The systems are not cross compatible with games online. If your kid's friends are on the 360, then stay with the 360. There are many that are not willing to make the move up for another couple of years.

I would get the 360. DH wanted the xbox one of for xmas but we are still keeping the 360 for myself and DD9. Xbox one doesn't have any games out yet that are really good for DD9 (I think Zoo tycoon is coming out in Jan which is the only game she'll have for the one for quite some time)

2 reasons I wouldn't shell out the money for the xbox one for your kids.
-Very limited games
-online chat- most of his friends will still have the 360. DH plays multiple games online with his brother and father and they only have the 360. When he plays the one, he can't interact with them.

I say sell or return the one. Maybe in a few years more of his friends will have it, there will be more games, and the price will be much lower.

Here is my 2 cents...

I would either try to sell the bundle you bought on eBay or, if you are not comfortable with that, just take it back to Costco and get your $600 back. Then get the kids the Xbox 360. It has tons of games that are good for kids and you can get them used and in good condition either from Gamestop or on eBay for much lower prices.

Also, you mentioned being nervous about buying or selling on eBay. I just wanted to tell you not to be nervous. EBay has controls in place to protect both buyers and sellers. Sellers do not ship items until payment is received and buyers are covered by the eBay Buyer Protection Plan (at no cost) in case the item is not what the seller said it would be. I, too, was nervous about it the first time I purchased and sold. But after that - piece of cake! And I have had issues with both sellers and buyers that were resolved easily and in a timely manner.

Anyway, good luck with your decision!

Thanks everybody. I did not know that not only are the games not compatible from one system to the next but also the online gaming and chat. I guess the 360 is the way to go. I knew I'd get a great advice on here.

I've seen so many reports of buyers claiming items were missing from the box and sellers forced to give refunds on ebay. That is the part that makes me nervous. If they claimed the controller or gold card was missing what would be my recourse?
