Well i know i posted last week about how i was getting my wisdom teeth out..Well i got them out on Tuesday, and im still in a TON of pain and really swollen...I have taken all the meds they have told me to ...ive done everything they said..and my right side of my face just feels on fire..right now it is throbbing...I can barely eat anything still...Does this sound like an infection? do i need to call the dentist monday? thanks

when I had my wisdom teeth out- I was put on an antibiotic then for a week after. But was given NO pain meds. I ended up calling my regular doc and she called me in a script for Tylenol2's...

I was swollen, sore, and couldnt eat much for about 8-10 days. I had all 4 done at the same time and 2 were basically "dug out" YUCK it hurts just thinking about it!

You might have a dry socket especially since you say it is throbbing on one side. If you are not feeling better by Monday morning I would have it checked out. I went for over a week with mine killing me and not knowing any better and it turned out to be a dry socket. They had to pack it every day for over a week but at least it really helped the pain.

Did you have surgery or did they just pull them?

I've had two pulled with just numbing shots, they never bothered me much at all. Heck I didn't even take the RX, just regular Tylenol.

Now I'm SUPPOSED to have surgery to get the other two pulled on the 2nd since they are impacted. I don't think I'm gonna do it because honestly I'm scared to death of any type surgery and they just aren't hurting me badly enough to do this right before Christmas. Now your post has me thinking too.

I was completely knocked out for it, and had 3 removed...I have done everything they said and it just keeps on hurting..but i would hate to call them on a sunday to find out out its me being a wimp or something,,,,thanks guys

Sounds like a dry socket. You need to go back to the dentist and have him apply a clove dressing to it - that is the ONLY way to relieve the pain. One sure way to tell if it is a dry socket is....if pain killers do NOT lessen the pain. A dry socket happens when the blood clot comes loose and the bone is exposed.

Yes, you need to call the doctor! I had my wisdom teeth out and was in tremendous pain several days later - it turned out I had dry sockets. As soon as I went in to the office they packed my teeth and I felt immediate relief. I let it go way too long, thinking the pain was normal.

I think some pain is to be expected but after a day or two it should be getting better, not worse. When I had dry sockets my entire head was throbbing...it was awful! Unfortunately, noone had warned me of that particular complication, so I simply suffered through the misery and was not told it was abnormal until I called into the office for a refill on my pain meds and was subsequently informed that I should not still be feeling pain a week later.

Well I'm a big BABY, no way, no how I'm not doing it.....unless the pain gets horrible.

Good luck, I think if your in that much pain I would call them. Thats what they are there for and there is no reason to suffer if they can do something that will only take a few minutes to make you feel better.

Can't add much that others have said, but also think it's a dry socket. My daughter had one when she had hers out and it really hurt a lot. She was in a lot of pain and you sound the same to me. If it really hurts don't wait until Monday. When my daughter had hers our doctor (fantastic guy) told us to call anytime. Don't go through more pain than you have to.

Good Luck and I hope you fell better soon.

My dentist told me if I had a lot of pain and swelling, to take a cooled tea bag and put it on my gums around the pain. The tea bag is supposed to help with clotting and stuff. I never got to that, I used my pain killers as often as possible.;) Some ice or a heating pad might feel nice on the outside of your cheeks.

so is there anything i can do until monday when i can get into the dentist?

Hey, I just got off the phone with my Dad - he is a DDS. He said to go to the drug store and get cotton balls. Find some Red Cross tooth drops, if you can't find them ask the pharmacist for oil of cloves. Soak the cotton ball with this solution and put it in the socket.....it will feel better immediately.

what do u mean they pack the tooth?
im sorry guys..im the biggest wimp and im just miserable tonight....im still swollen , and i can barely eat or talk wihtout my face hurting

basically what tiggersmom2 said...they put gauze in the socket where my tooth was extraceted....immediate relief!! Believe me, as much pain as I was in the last thing I wanted was for anyone to mess with my teeth, but as far as I remember (it's been years!), the 'packing' didn't hurt at all. It was just such a relief...Good luck!

I am so sorry you are having so much trouble, but I've been there, it will get better! Let us know how you are doing!

There are a lot of good ideas here... tiggersmom2 has a good idea... the only thing that I would be afraid of is if the clot is not out and you start messing around with it, you could cause yourself more pain. It's difficult for anyone to diagnose something without seeing it, especially because you listed swelling as one of your problems.
I know it sends up a red flag for us when a patient says that they have swelling... I guess it all depends on how much swelling you have. Do you have a temp as well? What does the area look like? Generally, if you've been eating anything... there will be a white substance on top of the wound. If there's a hole, it could very well be a dry socket.
Your doctor knows you best and he/she knows you best and knows how the procedure went. I would suggest calling them. At the least, they can call you in another/stronger Rx.

As long as she puts the soaked cotton ball directly on the socket, she should be fine, don't move it or jiggle it. Yes, swelling is a concern - this is not usual for a dry socket and could be indicative of an infection. Dry sockets usually only cause pain.

Thanks so much guys..i am so sorry im just a wimp! ...i just did the tea bag thing..and rinsed again with salt water..and got more ice...
Tiggersmom--thanks for calling dad for me..i just told mom what he said ..thanks again

No problem Blueeyes! I love to put the family expertise to good use, I hope you feel better soon.

i love these boards..tehres always someone that knows everything :) My mom wrote d own the stuff to go to the pharmacy tomorrow..i appreciate it..this pain is horrible!

The pain will go away soon. Another thing that helped me was filling a bulb syringe with warm water and squirting warm water directly on where it hurt. I had stitches and one set of stitches stayed irritated. The warm water directly on it soothed it a lot.
