Another wisdom tooth question--days later and still pain

Browneyes--i just added that to moms list when she goes to the store tomorrow...im still really dizzy ( dunno if its from lack of food or what) so im not allowed to drive yet....i feel like im 12 again :) Thanks so much for allll your help guys..

I swear I was swollen and bruised for a week. To be honest I can't remember much about that time period, but I was given pain relievers so that may explain it ;) . I know it was during summer so I didn't have school (good thing!). And I have such a clear memory of feeling betrayed by the chocolate milkshake that I so badly wanted on around the 2nd day. No one from the hospital told me not to use a straw! Ow!

well i am feeling a bit better this morning..i am stilll swollen ,but i am not in tears constantly. I already did the tea bag and rinsed with salt this morning..Im just going to relax today and hope the swelling goes down or ill be skipping classes tomorrow --Thanks for all of your help last night!

As long as she puts the soaked cotton ball directly on the socket, she should be fine, don't move it or jiggle it. Yes, swelling is a concern - this is not usual for a dry socket and could be indicative of an infection. Dry sockets usually only cause pain.

Hi all, i'm topping this because i just had a wisdom tooth out tuesday and am still pretty miserable. Although this is only the start of the third day, I'm wondering how long i should expect to be swollen and be in pain (hopefully just the 'regular' - normal pain.... if i hopefully don't get dry socket!!)? My Doc put me on anti-biotics right away, so i wouldn't think there's an infection (?) but it still hurts alot and seems to be as swollen as yesterday.

Thanks for any feedback.

I just looked at this because DD had her wisdom teeth out Jan 11. (Tuesday) She is complaing more of stiffness now than pain. Has been taking Advil 600mg every 6 hours plus a steroid, antibiotic, antibiotic rinse, and Percocet which she has only taken 1/2 at bedtime. Did lots of ice. Still only eating cream soups, jello, pudding, nothing that needs to be chewed.

Our doctor said the swelling peaks at 48 - 72 hours after surgery which would be today and tomorrow. And he said the bruising could come later too.

How weird this post is!! My oldest DD just had hers out last week & today found she has a dry socket! Just yesterday she started complaining of one side hurting more than the other. I encouraged rinising with warm salt water & encouraged her to try the tea bag thing. Well...she had her stiches out this morn & the Dr. said she had a "small" dry socket. So he put in a dressing that needs to come out tomorrow. He was just going to have her rinse with a syringe & warm water...but she goes back to school on Mon. so he put in the dressing to be sure it will be better by then.

I'd saw if you are still sore you should go & have it checked.

Dry sockets are the absolute WORST.

Blueeyes..did you even make it back to the Dentist? What was the outcome?

Poohlover, thx for your reply. Is it unusual for dry socket to occur a week later? I don't think i'm at that point yet but am holding my breath....

Breezy Carol, thx for your post, also. Hope your dd is coming along too, and yes, isn't Advil the best? :) I did call my doc once they opened and they said the same thing about the swelling, but they didn't mention bruising! That idea hadn't occured to me!

The timing is just so odd as i have teens who had theirs out but mine just came in! I'm soooo hungry too; soup and jello just aren't cutting it anymore!!

Hope both of your dd's continue to do well, and hope you're doing great now too, Blue eyes! ;)

Well i know i posted last week about how i was getting my wisdom teeth out..Well i got them out on Tuesday, and im still in a TON of pain and really swollen...I have taken all the meds they have told me to ...ive done everything they said..and my right side of my face just feels on fire..right now it is throbbing...I can barely eat anything still...Does this sound like an infection? do i need to call the dentist monday? thanks
Oh my God you poor thing! I had 3 of my wisdom teeth pooled at the exact same time and they gave me Demerol (SP) for the pain which worked for a couple days then it got horrible! I called & called the doctor for something stronger because it just barely helped anymore, he told me to come in. When I went in; he looked at my mouth and saw that is was dry socket because I couldnt open my mouth that wide or my jaws would feel like they was gona pop off my face. If you had this trust me you would feel this way too! So not only did it hurt from the teeth being pulled out but I couldnt even open my mouth all the way or I would feel nothing but pain! The doctor put lil Blue matches with medicine on it that tasted like lickerish (Sp) (yuck!) Inside where my teeth was pulled from. Which would cause me to feel like I was a ***** after cuz that alone felt horrible! Anyways sorry i have such a big mouth lol Get well soon byes ~ Amber Lucille ~

My DS had his wisdom teeth out several months ago. Remember: no straws, no spitting! When you need to rinse your mouth out, just lean over the sink and let the water dribble back out. Disgusting, I know, but you don't want any suction being created, which would dislodge where the wound sites are trying to clot over! Also, they say smoking is bad, because you're creating that suction too when you smoke. I'd tell anyone having trouble to go ahead and call the office to get help. They're like pediatricians, and expect to have to be called after hours if there are problems! My Ds had discomfort for a few days. He had to take the Vicodin together with an Advil to reduce the pain.

You might have a dry socket especially since you say it is throbbing on one side.

That's just what I'm thinking. That happened to me when I had mine out. It was odd - The first 3 or 4 days, there was some swelling, but not much pain. After that, I got a dry socket and HOLY CRAP!!! The pain was pretty much unbearable.
